My neighbor has a very big mahogany tree behind his yard and I have not been able to find out if it is a bird safe wood to use for DIY projects. Does anyone know?:)

Alison, do you know what type of tree your neighbor has exactly? Mahogany wood comes from 3 different species of trees here in the U.S.

Believe it or not, I couldn't really find a clear answer anywhere...this is the best I was able to come up with.

Mahogany : Grey Chat

Looked in my old info & the most popular mahogany woods are African, American, Honduran, Santos, Cuban, Gabon, Cedar, Luan, Cherry, Philippine, Brazilian, Hawaiian, Caribbean & Swietenia and all offer some form of irritation to humans, including dermatitis, alveolitis, rhinitis, asthma & conjunctivitis.

Like others' info, there's no mention of toxicity to psittacines, however, I do know that mahogany (no idea what specie) splinters rather easily & at least in me, the splinters tend to fester quickly, but once removed, don't leave any lasting problems.

That's not a true mahogany Wendy, but because some call it a mahogany, you're right about the possible confusion.....

The name is Swietenia Mahogany also known as West Indian Mahogany. We are in garden zone 10 A and it grows form here to the Florida keys. I don't plan to cut the whole tree down just a few small branches to make a perch for each cage. The tree is huge about 40 to 50 feet tall with a big canopy .:D Thank you for the links I did read them.

So Aliray,,, what did you decide?? I have one i want to remove from my back yard. I don't see it on the toxic wood list,But??? swietenia mahogani is what i have. I see it is also CITIES listed.
