Been lurking around here for a while doing research on purchasing a conure and deciding if it really is the right decision and I think I'm ready. I've come across someone selling their "sun conure" but I believe it to be a jenday, am I correct? Is this bird healthy?

What I know about this bird:
3.5 years old
flight wings clipped
very very very tame (sat on my shoulder and finger after 30 seconds and stayed there the entire 30 mins I was there)
unsexed
What are your opinions?

Yup, that's a jenday :)

With birds the only way to tell is a vet visit. The conure appears healthy, but a bird can have serious illnesses and show very little if any signs. A person experienced in birds may be able to notice something is "off" by examining them in person.

If you end up getting the conure, bring him to a certified avian vet for a new bird check up. If he's sick you'll know, if he is healthy your vet will then have good information if he ever does get sick to compare it too.

At the risk of sounding ignorant, why do his feathers look ruffled and disheveled?

He could of been playing, puffed out wanting to be pet, sick, or maybe he's a little cold or even sleepy.

With parrots many things they do have multiple meanings, it can get a little confusing so don't be afraid to ask why :)

Looks to me like he is not fond of the camera, which would explain the reason why his feathers are standing up a bit.

Awesome, thank you for all the replies. So I have no reason to worry about this bird based on the looks of his feathers? Of course I'll take him to the vet but don't want to buy him, get him vet checked just to find out he's dying or going to be thousands of dollars to fix. The person that currently is selling him has only had him for 3 months but he wouldn't give a clear reason on why he's selling this beautiful bird.

The pictures were taken on different days and different time of day, I don't know if that helps.

His feathers look good to me.

I know why! Because he is super LOUD!! LOL

Looks like a jenday, he also looks very healthy it as stated the vet is truly the real one that can diagnosis that:). He's beautiful that's for sure, I may be able to handle cockatoos and macaws but sun conures and jendays and even nan days have always bugged me With there screech:p.

My Caiques can be very loud, however I can live with it. Jendays and Suns, I cannot! I have fostered both and however beautiful and nice they were, my ears can't handle them.

I was reading that jendays were a lot quieter and milder than the sun conures, myth? He was very mellow and calm while I was there, I expect the morning screech and evening scream but you're right I couldn't handle an all day screech. Any recommendation on a quieter species of conure? I currently have 3 cockatiels that I've had since they were weaned that I got as a Christmas present about 11 years ago. I think I'm ready to move on to a bigger species but don't want to take on macaws or grays because of price and elevated skill level of care.

I work from home 90% of the week, own my own home with a screened in patio/pool area, no kids, a fat lazy declawed cat and my 3 tiels.

lol, I would say myth. My friend has 2 jendays and although they are adorable I cannot stand them. jendays and sun conures have such a loud sharp call, and call often.

I agree. My parents had a sun Conure, they lived on a busy street and if i went for a walk i could hear her clear down the road! I personally think that when it come to Jendays' and Suns they make just about the same amount of noise. They can be really sweet birds though and if the noise doesn't bother you i would say go for it. I think a good test would be to get on you tube and find some Jenday's calling and then turn it up and keep in mind this can last for 30 min or more for various times in the day. It is part of Conure health to be able to call out during the day. If you are looking for a bird on the more quiet side and a little more independent i would suggest a pionus. Our white capped is not super cuddly, as in she won't snuggle with you, but she loves head and cheek scritches though and is hands down the most even tempered. At some point in my life i would love to get a Pionus of my own. They are some of my all time favorites!

definitely a Jenday only way to tell if its healthy is by getting it checked by a vet also you should know as sweet birds as Jendays are they are THE loudest most obnoxious bird ever! just something you should know but they are great birds aside from that! Oh and his wings are not clipped his flight feathers are still there many people dont know how o clip wings properly they will clip the little feathers called the secondary flight feathers and not clip the primary wing feathers (larger ones) which mean they can still fly

My Green-cheeked conure, Wilbur :green2:, passed away recently but he was very quiet... made lots of adorable sounds, but did not screech at all. The sound I loved best was his "ribbit" (people believed that they were hearing a frog, he sounded so much like one) and the happier he was, the more and louder he would "ribbit"...He also laughed a lot..."hehehe, hehehe"!
I sure miss him...

Oh, I have to say though that if you are looking for something bigger than your cockatiels, GCC aren't big..I believe they are the smallest of the conures.

Not to scare you, but there are many reasons those who do not research parrots properly before bringing them home "rehome" them shortly after. Parrots are loud, messy, can be quite destructive, need a lot of attention, have expensive dietary needs, need to see a specialized avian vet (also not cheap), need toys constantly replaced, occasional bites are to be expected ect... Of course, if you have done your due research before considering bringing this beautiful little animal home, you already know and accept the challenge :)

As said, I don't want to scare you off from taking in this little cutie. Plenty of people can overlook those "nuisances" that come with parrot ownership because the good FAR outweighs the annoying. For the well research and prepared "parront", you can't find a better animal to welcome into your home. Parrots are intelligent, interactive, loving, multi-talented companions who bring a lot of joy to the homes of those who understand them.

My Jenday was loved by me, but his shrill piercing flock calls were too much for everyone else in the family.

I've always wanted a Sun or a Jenday, but I don't think I could handle the noise. I KNOW my partner would get fed up with it after a very short while lol.

I have a GCC, and he's very quiet. Granted i've only had him for two weeks, but he's been great so far. He'll occasionally call to my cockatiel if he can hear him whistling away, and that can be ear-piercing sometimes but I think it's more the fact that it's so unexpected (i'm learning to expect it lol) and it scares the bejesus out of me. But other than that all he does is chatter and make cute, quiet noises. He doesn't screech for very long, either. Usually just a quick "Bandit, stop that!" will get him to pipe down.

I've been dealing with cockatiels for YEARS and honestly, I too was looking for something a little bigger. But I am so happy with my little green cheek, and i'm so glad I got him. I think anyone would be. For little birds, they have HUGE personalities!
