Green cheek conure - Sydney (Syd) Hatched 2/2017
With cold weather fast approaching I have been thinking about warm toys. I sew so was considering a tent, then I saw an octopus which was a circle with fleece suspended in strips which I thought looked possible.

Today is just slightly chilly so as an ice breaker, so to speak, I have tied a tea-towel by one corner inside Syd's cage where it drapes over 3 perches to see what he would do.

After initially eyeing it thoughtfully he suddenly set to and has so far climbed it hidden in it and behind it, hung upside down talking to it, and generally had a great time. I can't leave it there because it is cotton and he will no doubt start working on the threads at some point, but it has occurred to me that the fleece I have which is from an old sweatshirt would just as easily be cut up and suspended in both his cages in the same way and he can tuck up inside should he want to.

Job done?

Hope you will show us your endeavours? Sounds interesting.

Ensure that there is no risks to Syd in terms of ingesting fibres or getting caught in any threads won't you?

Yes I'm very mindful of that problem. I haven't cut the fleece yet but when I do I will turn into a GCC and see what damage I can do before I use it on Syd.

He is currently hanging upside down in the tea-towel playing peek a boo. He's so comical - all he needs is a red nose and face paints!

I've made two, one is used, every night, while the other hasn't been touched, except to bite-must be viewed as an evil monster. Here is a link that will hopefully help you. She explains how to make one & talks about how so many have died when owners bought the kind where the fleece shreds. I've had no problem with that happening. Wish you luck with yours! Booger wraps himself in a blankie I made for him some time ago. Of course I keep an eye on it for signs of wear. He does not seem to want to chew it.. just wrap up in it nite times

Yes after watching Syd yesterday I think that's the way I'm going to go. Initially I think I will make a square and hang it by one corner. The main consideration - after safety of course - is to get the size right so he has lots of options. The teatowel was a little too big but it was good that it draped over more than one perch.

Experiment No 2. Today I cut the sleeve off an old child's fleece hoodie. It's about 12" long. I slit it open up the seam from armpit to cuff, so it looks like a teepee.

I have pegged it by the cuff to the roof at the back corner of Syd's cage and pegged one side of the bottom of the opening to the bars to keep it open. So far he has climbed all over it, ducked inside a couple of times and leaned up against it chatting as if they are old friends.
