Is my new Indian ringneck comfotable

Hello.

I have rehomed a blue Indian ringneck last week.

He didn't look at me for a few days so I left him in his cage and just spoke to him. Yesterday I opened the cage door and he flew out and sat on my head for a while before flying back in.

Does this mean he is now ok with contact with me on his own terms or can I start approaching his cage to encourage him to come out when I ask him?

You will sort of "feel it" a frightened stressed bird looks frightened and stressed, there he looks a bit nervous which is to be expected first time out but mainly he looks inquisitive to everything around him, just go at his pace and let him do his thing, try teaching him to step up onto a stick. It makes things a lot easier in the training and means other people can handle him which is always a plus!

Give him some good treats and I am sure he will start trusting you. You will need some patience until he trusts you completely but I am sure you will be able to tame him as time passes. Beautiful bird btw looks little greenish blue in the pic

Your parrot is not afraid of people is really a good beginning for him to trust you and your family. Try to give him treats before interacting so he starts to trust you slowly and gradually you will be able to pick him up and touch him. Judging from the situation I don't think it will take time for him to trust you and your family.

That's a question. How do I find out what he likes, just trial and error. I gave him some cooked veg from dinner last night which ended up half way across the room from him throwing it out the side of the cage ������������

Most of the ring necks love fruits and seeds. Try giving him some fresh corn, pomegranate, small apple pieces and feed him with your hand so that he will start trusting you. They also love bell peppers (green and red) and chillies too. It works for me I am sure it will work for you too. Here are a few pics of my parrot I am currently training him to act dead xD. I have a pair of ring necks, this one is male. With patience I am sure you will reach this stage too. Don't feed him oily food it will effect his feathers instead give him boiled veggies and fresh fruits with seeds.

A good way to make him trust faster is give him some freedom when you are home with your family. That way he can come near you and start exploring his surroundings. When I go home I always keep them open, female loves to sit on my shoulder while male loves to sit on my head. Keep him outside the cage for an hour at least daily that way he will become healthy as flying is good exercise for him.

That's what we did last night. My son put his hand up to the birds chest and the bird hopped up onto his arm so I guess that's a good sign.

In terms of trying new foods. Prioritise getting him on a good (pellet) diet. I tend to favour being a bit meaner than feels entirely comfortable, I remove other foods and only offer pellets rather than slowly reducing other foods. It's just what's worked for me.

Keep trying new foods, time in the day, size of "chunk", temperature and presentation all make a difference believe it or not! If I chop up veg and put it in McCoy's bowl it goes on the floor. Give him a whole lettuce heart or stick chopped up veg on a bamboo bbq skewer and hang it in his cage or just feed him piece by piece through the cage and he's all over it!
