my darling lovebird
wondering whats happened....

bamboo is a healthy bird. he eats fine and stuff, but today morning he started sneezing- like every minute or so.its not exactly a sneeze, but somewhat like a choking sound like hes trying to get something out.
i dont know why this is happening. he was just fine this morning. well i think its because he was eating something thats not good. i took him out of his cage today morning, and he was totally normal. then he got bored and flew to the curtain rod ( he loves sitting there) i always see him pecking at something on the rod, so i get him off everyday. today i just let him stay for some time. hen i heard this wierd choking sound, and he flattened all the feathers on his head, strethchedhis head out and fluffed out again. he kept doing this for some time, and after i forced him to drink water he was okay again. i put him back in the cage again, and after sitting there nicely fr some time, he starts this strange choking/sneezing/snuffing sound

could any of you know whats wrong? he has somewhat stopped now, but im not taking risks.:(
thanks anyways!:greenyellow:

oh and yes.... i'd used some bug spray this morning. but i had him out of my room, and locked the door carefully so i dont think it was the spray. but could it be?

I wish I knew more about Budgies to tell you. I hope someone can answer your question.

Is the cage located in your room???? I don't use bug spray within the house cause they will leave residue and everything needs to be cleaned and the room aired out real good before it is considered safe for your bird again. What's the reasoning in using the bug spray???

Watch him carefully, and look for any other signs of an illness...like watery droppings, being less active, or eating less, etc. I would recommend taking him to a vet, just to be on the safe side. If you see other unusual signs, especially watery droppings, then definitely take him to a vet.

It seems like birds are sensitive to dust, and it could cause them to sneeze a lot. So it might just be dust. I keep my parakeet, Chipper in my bedroom, and no matter how I try to keep my room clean, there is always a lot of dust for whatever reason. So she does have times where she sneezes a lot. But she isn't sick and my vet said she is doing fine.

I would really recommend taking your bird to a vet. But at the very least, watch him carefully for anything else unusual. Sneezing by itself might not necessarily mean he's sick, but if there are other signs, then don't ignore it. Even if you take him to a vet and it turns out that he's not sick, then at least he'll get a checkup and that's always good.

I hope your birdie will be doing better soon.

If the spray is strong enough to harm a lizard (or even an ant) it shouldn't be used anywhere near a bird. Catch the lizard and let it go :) the sneezing may also be dust and debris. Birds usually sneeze when particles irritate their nostrils. As long as he's not panting or wheezing he's probably ok. Just be careful in the future, permanent damage or death can result in spraying things in the room. There probably aren't any avian vets around, so be careful. You're a good parent for being so concerned and checking up on everything. :)

Well, if you haven't noticed anything else unusual like watery droppings or eating less, then he's probably fine. Maybe clean his cage out really well with hot water, and wipe off whatever surface you have his cage on (if it's on a table, stand, etc.) Look for anything around his cage that might be gathering a lot of dust, and try to clean it. It would be a good idea to open the windows in your room and air out your room really well. Just make sure Bamboo is not too close to the windows, so he doesn't get a draft and doesn't get too cold.

Do you have another smaller cage that you can use to take him out with you for a while? If it's not too cold, then some sun and fresh air might do him some good.

That's great that you're paying such close attention and taking good care of your bird. Birds instinctively try to hide their symptoms if they're sick (so that in the wild, they wouldn't attract predators). So you have to pay very close attention to anything out of the ordinary, more than you would with other small animals. Sneezing doesn't necessarily mean they're sick, and it doesn't mean you have to panic. But it does mean you should be extra observant and watch for anything else unusual.

So far, it sounds like your birdie is going to be okay. :) But just keep an eye on him.

By the way, where did you get him? Is there anyway someone can recommend a vet? There HAS to be one somewhere around where you live. This is extremely important to know, because there might come a time when your bird does need medical attention, beyond what you can do. Even if it's kind of far away, it's worth it. I found a great vet. They're about 25-30 minutes away, which is kind of far, but it's what I have to do. The doctor is an actual avian vet, and everyone there is very friendly and well trained.

You need to find an Avian Vet, search around online for an Avian Vet in your state. Your bird still might be fine, even if he has watery poop.

Is he still acting normal? Fluffed up the whole day? Sleeping a lot? Looks weak? Sleeping on 2 feet? Not playing as he used to? Drinking or eating more/less?

no. he lost his balance a few times. still pooping a lot but its not watery

If his poop is better and he seems ok he probably is. I know in India finding a vet who specializes in birds is impossible. Is he acting normally?

how is Bamboo doing today? I hope he is feeling better.

oh thanksbguys for asking.yeah, like i said he is comparatively okay.. his poop is less runny but he is still pooping more than usual. he stumbled quite a few times like he cudnt perch properly. he is still sneezing more than seems normal......

im looking so hard for a vet. there might be some guys who do check birds but they arent trustable. plus they charge too much, and most of them dont even know what they're doing. they're just random dog clinics who say "bird care"

I hope you can find someone reliable who can check him out. I'm so sorry this is happening to you and Bamboo:(

If its a dog clinic that's also offers "bird care", than all they probably offer is clipping wings and nails. Just be sure to never use sprays around him. Hopefully he'll start feeling better soon. Sometimes these things just need time to work out if the system.
