Amy a Blue Front 'Zon
Jonesy a Goffins 'Too who had to be rehomed :-(

And a Normal Grey Cockatiel named BB who came home with me on 5/20/2016.
... little BB...sometimes I don't understand him. I make him a nice plate for brekky..scrambled eggs with a little melted cheese..a few corn and pea nibs...pea pods..kale..a grape cut in pieces..and place the plate on my desk...he likes to eat with me. He'll walk down my arm and jump on the desk and just NIBBLE..a corn nib..a pea..a little egg...then he walks around the plate "picking" at "imaginary" stuff on the desk..ignoring his plate
then its beaky this and beaky that chew chew chew on my key board or anything else...but FOOD.. sighhh

With a BB, I'm not sure, but clearly from an Amazon's point of view, you failed to humble yourself prior to serving the offering.

The Rickeybird would have popped the keys off and flown away with at least one by the time you raced over there. BB is an angel. I just wish that the Rb would let me have a 'tiel.

Steven, I have no problem with Amy..she patiently awaits her nummy bowl in the morning and will stuff her beaky full of anything and everything I serve her,she isn't really that picky..oh sure, she'll throw what she isen't interested in out the bowl...and she lets me know when its time to feed her..she'll put her head in her nummy bowl and yell 'FOOD!!FOOD!!" then laugh at herself ( I think she gets a kick out of hearing her voice echo in the bowl).

I'm just worried Beebs isn't getting enough of the proper goodies in his belly. At times he really does go to town with his plate..seems to love smashed 'tatoes..why not? when he is done with them,he runs thru them, only to flutter/flapflap onto my shoulder before I can stop him .

Well I guess between 490ish g's with Amy and a hefty 89g's with Beebs, he isn't going to pig out like a 'zon..still I wish he'd eat more.

Yes Gail...all in all..the little grey kid is pretty awesome, I will admit :grey:
He is just started to "fly" a bit. I yelled at him today for chewing on the mouse chord and he took off, made it thru the doorway without crashing and ended up on the tv..I don't know if that was his objective lol...but he did it.

Jim, The only way to know is to observe and take his daily weight. Its a pain, but its the only way!

Hmmm, Tatoes covered should pads! Hey - New Style Statement: Been With My Bird Today, Whats Your Excuse?

So, Amys pushing 490 g's! May want to do some Wing Flapping drills with him. Hey Jim, will Amy let you but your ear to his chest? If so, start keeping track of his heart rate, especially if you start adding some drills to his life. You will want to target hearing an at rest heart rate and a heart rate with a bit of Wing Flapping.

I keep telling you that Amy's going to give Amazons a Good Name! We have been working for years to keep this kind of stuff under wraps!!! :D

Jim, I second the gram scale for your flock. They are pretty inexpensive now , not like when you and I were young guys, weighing out.. well weighing stuff. Hey still using the 'car seat' for Amy?

Yep, you can get one of those food scales for the kitchen, for weighing servings (just make sure it has grams) super cheap. The best thing to do is get a little perch to put on top of the scale, then use the TARE function and put your bird on the perch

There are some good examples. You can get a scale that size and one of those three sided perches to put on the scale seperately for probably cheaper or just buy one that comes with. If youre going to DIY and buy seperately, make sure the perch has a stable base to put on the scale like the last picture or the three sided one like in the first picture.

Steven...I'm lucky I can hear myself talk..never mind a birdies heart beat
At her last wellness check the doc said it sounded fine..but she didn't make Amy do any exercises..

Yes I have been thinking of a scale now for some time.

Al...Its been too cold to take her anywhere now..but she did ride on it one time after you and Salty were here...my thanks again for a very cool perch!

I know exactly what you're talking about. I set up a nice bowl with food and veggies and more and Eric walks around the table eating napkins and other thing in the table. He loves seeds although he never gets them. I think that they just want to do what they want to do. Sigh.:yellow1:

Jim,

What I am aiming at is you being able to hear Amy's heart rate. Not implying any problem, only that Amy is no longer a Spring Amazon, she is becoming a lady of grace! So its coming to a point that it is important for you to have a understanding of what her rested state heart rate sounds like and what it sounds like when she has been a bit active. This way, 'if' you hear a racing heart rate, you can ID it. Next time Amy is visiting her Vet, ask your AV if you can listen to her heart!

My YWA was about Amy's age when I first heard the slushing sound of a failing heart valve in its early stages. If I had not, several years before hand, gotten interested in listening to his heart, I would not have Bee Lined It to the AV's office.

Hence the question, can you place your ear upon Amy's chest? It not, I believe that it is a wise 'trick' to add to your interactions with her.

Steven,

FYI: You know, this might make a good segment for either Senior Parrots Forum or as part the I Love Amazon's Thread!

I listen to the Rb's heart, ear to chest. It's so fast I don't even try to count the beats, I just know the pitty-pat/rhythm. Every now and then he decides to let out a screech at those times, and it's pretty eardrum bursting!

Yeah, they are still great even if they can be a little stubborn. I have a friend whose 'tiel did what ever, and just sat there and eat what he got. He was nice but a bit boring ;). Still, it would be good if they actually ate the stuff they were given
