Is a chinquapin branch safe to use as a perch?

My grandma cut a branch off of her tree so i was wondering if it was safe for parrots or not. Im pretty certain that if i were to put it in my cockatoos cage he would chew on it a bit, so i really want to make sure it wont harm him. Im not great at identifying trees but my grandma says its a chinquapin, and she has more experience than i do when it comes to that stuff. Here is a picture of the branch:
