Hello everyone. Glad I found this forum. Very friendly people. I have read alot in the past week.
I have a question.
My wife has a quaker parrot. While trying to get her to step up on my hand, she always gets distracted by the hair on my fingers. Yes, I have hairy fingers. No matter what position I hold my hand or finger, she just reaches around and grabs the hair on my finger and pulls. Little painful, but not bad. I will never get her to step up on my finger/hand until I can figure out how to take her attention off my hairy fingers. Treats arent working. She is captivated by my hairy hands. lol Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance

Shave em, lol. Try distracting her with a treat and reward her with it once she steps up.

First of all welcome, make yourself comfortable
I apologize in advance....... I did have a good laugh I can just picture the bird going for you hands, eina that must be quite painful.
I agree with erik7181 shave, I reckon as long as the hair remains on your hands, it will be a temptations....... Perhaps she is trying to show you how to preen yourself LoL

Hahaha ant you do make me laugh

Quakers are very much known for their love of grooming their owners
spe******ingbin glasses and jewellery remodelling
mole , freckle , lump removal services
pimple popping expertese
and hair do spe******ts

Sorry but I'm with the others on this one shave
or even get out the old nose hair clippers they work well

Very interesting problem. I guess if you let him pull on the hairs enought times he will get bored with this activity. Their attention span is very short. Easy for me to say, I am not feeling the ouch!!

could you turn your hand around (palm up) and have her step up that way..may be awkward at first

Glad I could provide some entertainment.

Made some progress tonight. I took the pain and let her explore my hand as much as she wanted. After awhile her pulling became much gentler. She was actually preening and not pulling.
Guess you were right Ant, she didnt appove of my groming and needed to show me how it was properly done!
Spirit, hoping she will eventually loose interest, until then I will TAKE THE PAIN. LOL

Thanks for all the comments. Cant wait till she discovers my beard. THAT should be fun!

LOL This is a very interesting problem :) I just adore quakers!
Another thing you could do is wrap your fingers and see if that works :) Good luck!

Just an update for those interested.
Made progress today. Sarah,(wifes quaker) steped up on my hand. For the past few weeks I have offered her my hand and allowed her to preen my fingers till her hearts content. ALWAYS thanking her while she was busy grooming me. Well today, the temptation of the hair on my hand and arm was too great for her so she stepped up. Hung out on my arm preening away, then gradually made it to my shoulder. Well, I knew it would be fun when she found my beard! She was actually very gentle.
I wonder if it has anything to do with the color. I have red hair. When I was staitioned in Japan, kids used to love to touch my hair.
Anyway, life with the quaker is great. She has become a very loved member of the family. Ive built her a few play areas.
Ive always wanted a macaw, since I was a kid. My house isnt quite big enough for such a majestic bird. However, I have been seriously considering a Hahns Macaw. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

i have a hahns macaw, they think they're a big bird in a little body! they have cheeky personalities but do tend to be a bit nippy, they like LOADS of attention and do have a tendancy to get loud especially if they dont get there way!!
but with enough patience and love they make great pets!
