Hi all,

I am trying to find out about a leg band on my orange winged. I would like to find out at least an approximate age on him. I am just curious that if I may be able to find out who breed him by the letters on the band, I may could contact breeders in the area to see if I get lucky enough to find something out.
His band has RM 8 WA (WA is sideways, I understand that means the state) and it is a closed band.
So has anyone on here dealt with a bird with that info on the band? Is there any way to find out who/what the "RM" stands for? I heard that the "R" could be breeders name, the "M" could mean Male and the "8" could be clutch ranking.

If only breeders had to have a registered tag info procedure..... instead of multiple breeders using the same letters. I would like to see all breeders have a certain assigned letter to be identified on the bands. Maybe there needs to be a wildlife/exotic law created for this because so many zon's end up with multiple owners.

Hope someone can shine some light on this for me.
Thanks

So if you are in WA and can tell me about a breeder that may be worth contacting please let me know.

Here is the information I have for tracing leg bands.

Didn't find anything on this site (there were two previous sites that had a lot of information about leg bands on them, but have since been closed down)
New Leg Band Registry

This website has a list of breeders and leg band codes (didn't see yours on there)
parrot breeders and band numbers, tracking your bird band

A YH group that helps trace bands (couldn't find anything on a short search) LegBandNumbers : Leg Band Numbers

A few places that produce leg bands may or may not help trace the band if it's one of theirs...

RM probably stands for the breeders initials *OR* the abbreviation of their aviary. You can also search Bird Breeder's for breeders. One possible breeder is Requa Aviary or another is Riverbend Aviary, although I would question that. It's possible that some of the other breeders in Washington, or even the pet stores there might recognize the band code.

There is always the possibility the breeder may no longer be in business. Many breeders have shut down due to the poor economy.

thank you all so much..... this has been very frustrating. All I want to know is his age. at least an approximate. Our first visit to the vet, ( the day after I got him) that was the first question they ask. I felt like an idiot saying " I don't know". With dogs, a vet can give you an estimate but with Sammy , nope! I am never letting him leave my home for sure, but I am aware of the life span for him and I am planning to make sure arrangements in the event he out lives me. ( my son is already on notice and would take him now if I would allow it lol) May sound a lil crazy to some people but we take care of our human children this way and Sammy is my child as well. I look forward to many, many years with him. But I would love to know something about his history. Curiosity is hard.
Again, thanks all so much. I will check out these sites tonight.

I do understand that! I wish I knew how old my cherry head was, but he didn't have a leg band. I also have three cockatiels I have no clue on age, and none of leg bands... I only know that one is over 15 years old, but for all I know, he could easily be in his twenties or older.

My mitred conure is the only one with a leg band. The couple that fostered him estimated him to be about 10 or 11 years old, thought he was a cherry head and wondered if he was from the wild flock of cherry heads in San Francisco. As neat as that sounds, he is no cherry head. He was 12 years old when I got him, making him 19 now, and his parents were wild caught imports. It is kind of neat to know a bit more about his history.
