indian ringneck questions

I'm sorry I keep posting, but I just have so many questions!

I really love GCC, but lately I've become so fascinated by IRNs. I'd really love to own one. they seem very charming and hilarious. I know I asked a similar question but now this is aimed right for indian ringneck owners.

I know that it varies from bird to bird, but in general, you'd say that IRN can be extremely loud, correct?

Also, I've read they should only be for experienced bird owners, and that they need at LEAST 3 hours of play time outside of their cage a day, or else they get angry and nippy. There might be days in my schedule (especially around midterms and finals) that I won't be able to spend any time with it at all. I'll try to make time, but I know that especially around finals, there might be days where I literally wake up, go to school, work on schoolwork till 4 am, and then come home to sleep.

Is this a problem?

Is there anything I should know specifically about IRN that as an owner, you were surprised at?

Also, does anyone know of any breeders of Indian Ringnecks in the GA/SC area? I'm having a hard time finding any breeders, really.

Thanks!

I'm not a Indian ringneck owner but my best friend have one named Sunny.

I can't say Sunny is REALLY loud, but he does sceam a lot! Sunny gets about 5 hours of free time outside of his cage daily, he is out of the cage every time when I go visit him.

Have you though about alexandrine parakeet? They are basically a bigger version of a ringneck. I prefer alexandrine because they are not as nippy as ringneck. Some ringneck can be very aggressive. Alexandrine is more independent, so they will be happy to play with their toys, and can be left along longer than most other parrots.

yes LOUD and i dont know where that experience thing came from they arent that hard to care for really ive had two i rescued and rehomed i was surprised at their loudness and they were very playful. The more time the better but these birds will entertain themselves easily just put lots of toys in the cage and if he/she gets bored change the toys around i dont think they really have to have 3 hours every day but of course the more the better an hour or two will be good and you can have the wings clipped and take it around with you while doing cleaning :) heres a breeder in GA I got a lovebird from them and they have the sweetest lovies and ringnecks very good breeder i would buy form again! although i dont support puppy breeding thats another topic. Yah, I looked at them but they are too expensive for me. :/

also, as I mentioned in my other post, I live in an apartment, so I'm concerned that an IRN would be TOO loud.

Yeah, IRN might be a bit too loud. What about African ringneck? They are not as loud as IRN, but they are very hard to find, and looks just about the same as IRN.

I dont find that IRNs are as loud as Conures. My friend has 2 Ring Necks and a Conure and I would say that the Conure is by far the loudest.

Maybe some of of have different tolerent levels with certain noises.

@wenz, what about green cheek conures? are IRNs louder than them?

another good question:
How do these birds handle travel/changes of environment? I go to school in GA, but I go home to CT every year for the holidays for about a month and a half. I usually drive up, and the drive is about 17 hours long. Could an IRN handle something like that? Or is that too stressful? Do you think another bird, like a Green Cheek Conure could handle it better?

I just got my IRN and she is actually very quiet but still young. The ones I've had in the past could be loud when they wanted to and talked loud, but did not "scream" as often as my plum head or other birds I've been worked with.

I don't mind if they scream every now and then. I just can't have a bird that will scream constantly, especially when I'm away. That's what my fear is.

My IRN isn't loud at all. I got him when he was a baby and spent lots of time with him, he says quite a few words now too, he's 2 years old now. Once in a while if I leave the room and rustle a chip bag or something he will make what I call a laser noise which is the normal IRN scream but he does it once or twice and as long as I let him know I'm coming back he's okay.
I also have a cockatiel and the tiel is ALOT noisier than the IRN. The IRN is just really chatty and talks to himself and toys alot. I barely notice him!

Oh and as far as experience goes I wouldn't worry too much about it, just make sure you have lots of time to spend with them, I'm a stay at home mom so the cage is open all day for them to wander around. He's also not nippy, he's bitten me once but that was when I was clipping his nails and I accidentally clipped too short and he let me know!
My tiel is alot more of a handful than my IRN.

What do you consider enough time with them? I go to school full time, so I'm gone for most of the day.

I get up half hour early and just sit with Ollie bonding and talking.
Them in the evenings ill talk a lot whilst he's chattering

Sorry for the delayed answer.. I have been away for the Weekend!

I would not say that they are any louder than GCC's..
As far as travel goes, I really dont think it would make any difference between the 2:)

So you think they'd handle the travel pretty well?

I've done roadtrips with my irn all the time. She's stayed n strange houses, gone to stores, stayed in hotels, been in a car for 7 hours, etc. The thing is to make it a point to build good experiences traveling with your bird. Take it outside (harnessed or in a cage). Take it over to a friend's house. Take it to a pet store, etc.

I live in an apartment, so I take my bird to the clubhouse and other people's apartments. Exposing them to new situations with new people in controlled environments is how you prepare a bird for travel.
