E.T. (extra talkative), our beloved cockatiel, passed some time ago.
Until I found this site there was no where to give him a proper send off.
I bought E.T. in 1982, from a backyard breeder who had come highly recommended.
He was healthy, a little timid, and very active.
E.T. took to training very well. I built him a playpen with plywood and dowels, which he loved!!
He liked his toys.
I bought him huge wrought iron parrot cage, so he had spacious accommodations.
E.T. learned to whistle cat calls, wolf whistles, and the first part of the 1812 overture, except for the cannon part. He also learned to say pretty bird.
He was a delight.
He took well to our dogs as they were introduced into the family. He would interact with them like they were his buddies.
We were so lucky in that respect. In our ignorance we did not know of the dangers dogs pose to some birds. Luckily our dogs never once showed aggression towards him. He could literally walk on our Akitas back.
He survived the '94 Northridge earthquake, but not unscathed!! We live 18 miles from the epicenter. His cage fell over, and in the darkness we did not realize he was injured and bleeding. Luckily the bleeding stopped and he was ok.
When my 87 yr old grandma came out, E.T. sang and whistled for her so beautifully, my grandma spoke of it always.
One morning in the spring of 2006 I came out to find E.T. having difficulty breathing. Within minutes his breathing difficulty increased dramatically. I picked him up to try and comfort him. My little buddy died in my hands about a minute later. He was 24.
I still get teary now as I type this.
I could not even think about having another bird for a long time after that.
It was so painful, I threw all his toys an playpen away, and got rid of his cage, the constant reminders were too much.
He rests now. We still miss him terribly.
I know this happened a while back, but wanted to give him a proper write up. He deserves it!!
Cheers to you, E.T.!!!
