Hello, am new here, adopted a molluccan cockatoo from the bird store about a month ago. owner said a lady dropped him off about a month ago with no history. the store owner had him sexed and that is all. is it legal to own a cockatoo with no band or history ? little late now but am curious :)

Its not illegal here in the UK not to have a legband! My Amazon dosen't have one.

Welcome to the Forum :)

Do you have a pic of your too?

I'm not sure because of the state you're in, hopefully someone else can come and help you out with that.

Vet's take them off for fun here :p Considered getting Merlins removed as it seemed to bug him, but he's fine with it now. Trades a lot stricter in the US though isn't it. Especially on 'exotic' species like M2's + things like hyacinths.

thats why I posted, am not sure about the laws here, do know it is illegal to trap or trade in wild birds. will try to post a picture. his feet are messed up so that he walks on his ankles and the store owner seemed to think he is a older bird:rolleyes:

It generally doesn't become an issue if you don't plan on having to move across state lines with the bird, although it does depend on state. There are quite a few other members that live in florida, I'm sure one of them can give you more specific information. I have 9 birds that don't have leg bands but I do band all of my babies :)

Not being banded seems to be the common "theme" these days. 8-10 years ago, every bird was banded that I'm aware of, the difference being between and open or a closed band. Now, more and more birds are being sold without a band.

My Goffin doesn't have a band, and much like you, the former owners have given me very little information. The store owner where I got her from has been trying to get me the information I want/need, but so far, no luck. I totally feel ya ;) I think it depends on the state, as to whether they absolutely have to have a band or not, and the Appendix code for each particular breed. My Goffin is an Appendix I, which means that they are heavily regulated. And yes, Mayden, you're correct. Trade is a lot stricter in the US, particularly for "exotics", but it also depends on the state.

Good luck with your new baby!

My biggest issue with Sugar not having a band or a band number  I have to travel through 3 states, not counting the state I'm in and the state I'm going to, when I move in 2 months. Yay.

Oh no! Could you not speak to your vet about maybe getting something sorted out about that? Surely there's a way for the vet to certify that the bird is okay for crossing state lines and used to have a band or something? ;/

Could I see a picture of his feet please?

The vet can give me a health certificate, but she can't prove the bird ever had a band without paperwork from the previous owners. While there's only 3 Avian Vets in my particular area (that I'm aware of), nothing says that they didn't just take her to a general Vet that "does" birds and there are hundreds of those in the area. Not to mention that the store I got her from is almost an hour away from me, and I've heard of people who drive 2 hours to get to her. So imagine the radius that gives me? Yeah, no idea where to even begin to search for her previous vet. IF she ever had one!

Do you mean like he's missing his toes? That's usually a sign of a parent-raised bird and the parents over preened.

And couldn't it be possible that the bird has never even been to a vet? You'd be surprised at how many people don't take their animals in for regular check ups, if the bird has never appeared sick in any way the previous owners may have never felt the need to take her to the vet.

MAYDEN a picture of one of his feet, they are both the same

, no missing toes, he just stands on his ankles

have to taken him to see a vet about how he walks

Hence why the very last thing I said was "IF she ever had one" because it's fully possible that she's never been. Supposedly she was DNA sexed by her previous owners and I was under the assumption that only vets could do that.

Sorry, I must have missed that. You can do DNA testing from home, I do it as do many people since it's only about $20 to do yourself compared to what a vet would charge.

A lot of states actually requires you to have the birds vet checked before allowing to cross the border. I personally do not care for leg bands. One of the birds I used to own had to have her foot amputated because of leg bands.....
