hello all! OK, so tomorrow i am going to the dentist to get 2 cavities drilled. last time i had this done they gave me 3 doses of Novocaine + laughing gas and i still felt it! I used to be able to almost fall asleep and let them do as much work as they want without caring at all. Now I'm terrified of the dentist, i even had a nightmare about it. can you guys give me some advice on how to get through my appointment. I'm too young and not heavy enough for sedation dentistry so that's not an option. any tips? are you guys scared of the dentist, and what to you do when you go? Thank you all so much, it means allot!!!

Oh no, I feel for you. Every time I get my cavities done they give me one shot of novicaine and start drilling, it hurts but I just clench my fists and get through it. I'm too young for sedation too(I'm 15).

I know that didn't help, I just wanted to wish you good luck.

It's going to be ok! I know it's hard, but just try to relax and concentrate on something else. (like your birdie babies :) ) The last time I had novacaine, I didn't feel a thing. It's such a strange sensation to slowly not be able to feel half your face.

thanks everybody!RioMom- im sure coming home to my fids will make it easier :). it is weird when they give you Novocaine, its especially hard to drink with a straw lol!'
Cdog- only one dose! that must be hard, i asked for more, but after a certain point i dont think they are allowed to give you more. thats a good way of puting it, maybe i will bring a rubber ball to squeeze or something like that. If you think about it, its only 1 hour and then its like it never happened.

I feel a bit better so thank you! does anyone know any relaxation techniques? I also found the Patron Saint of dentistry, St. Apollina, prayers coming her way!

It is pretty funny how you slobber when you drink for a while!

For relaxation, maybe try closing your eyes and picturing yourself somewhere peaceful? Or let peaceful songs run through your mind?

Here's a nice peaceful song

Thank you! that's a very soothing song, that and "going to my happy place" should help :). i would get ice cream after, but i don't think I will be able to use a spoon lol. i feel better about this now :0)

I find if you just don't think about you should be fine. What I do, and this will sound weird, just start a conversation with yourself in your head, and I mean really get into it. Start arguing with yourself, question your sanity, just act like you are in a serious debate with someone and it will all be over before you know it. I argue with people about animals because I like to correct people when it comes to animals.

Yes it was only one does but I'm pretty good with pain, I broke both my arms at the same time and I didn't even quiver, I just said, "I think I need to go to the er now".
I think you should give my technique a try, people may think I'm crazy now but it really does work.

Yeah, I would hold off a little while on the ice cream, in addition to not being able to eat without a bib, the cold might hurt a bit right away.

i dont think thats crazy, i think it would work very well! both arms, how on earth did that happen ! i can be pretty good with pain, i just shake it off and clench my teeth. but when it comes to the dentist something about it just makes me flip out lol

Well I took the back wheel off my bike to replace the tube and fix the brakes but apparently I didn't put it back on tight enough and I went off a curb and the wheel fell off stopping the chain and propelling me forward. I would have been fine except my handle bar grips slipped down(with my wrists) and my arms got stuck between the handle bars and the brake levers, snapping them.
And all that happened on the second day of summer brake!

I'm sure you will do great, just don't think about it or you will get all worked up and freak yourself out. Find something to keep your mind off of it in the mean time, good luck!:D

I don't get Novocain period, I asked them not to use it on me. I've been told by two dentist that I'm their ONLY patient that asked not to be drugged. It makes me very sick and it ruins my day completely. The only time they refuse not to use it on me IF they were doing serious dental work. They would be drilling away and I'm falling asleep in the chair, they don't know how I do it....lol.....

This same exact thing happend to me 2 years ago. It had been awhile since I had gone to the dentist and I was going in to have everything looked over and address any problems. My bottom left was impossible to numb, he gave me 3 shots of novacaine and it would hurt so bad when he went to drill. He ended putting a temp filling in, calling it a day, and addressing the rest of my cavaties in different appointments. I was so scared, just like you. It turns out that your mouth may be tough to numb in certain areas, but that shouldn't effect the rest. My top left, top right, and bottom right all numbed up fine with my next appointments. We finally made the appointment to finish up that first session. I was so scared I got a migraine that day and left a voicemail on his machine early in the AM that I wasn't going to be able to come in and that I'd call back to reschedule, which I never did. When I went back in for my cleaning, like 4 months later. I finally confessed that we had to finish up that last appointment with the temp fillings. I think he was more nervous that me. My eyes were wide open and I was staring him down the entire time. I couldn't push my head farther back in that seat! My hands were clenched. I was a wreck! He gave me the first dose and waited. He started drilling and I could feel it again! My heart sank I thought this was going to be the same thing all over. He gave me a 2nd novacain shot and it worked! I didn't feel a thing the rest of the time. Now I brush and floss extra hard on that bottom left side. I never want another cavity there again! lol

You will be your own worst enemy in there. Just try to forget that last appointment because you will flinch at any tickle you might feel. I know thats how I was. I just kept telling myself, u felt that a little, but its bareable, let it go and see if you can just get through it. The good news is, once it starts to hurt bad, he can stop drilling and the pain goes away instantly.

Thanks everybody! Mikey: WOW I got scared just thinking about that lol!
Cdog: That stinks, at east it probably healed before you had to start writing. How long did it take to heal?
Jenlyn: that sounds scary! At least you finally got it drilled and sealed.
update: it's all done! I went through the appointment with a little pain which stopped after she gave me novicane. They were very tiny and it went by fairly quickly. The novicane made my lip lazy and when I smiled one side didn't go up lol. I tried to drink water and my lips wouldn't stay together, it took so e practice before I could keep it in lol. Thank you guys for the support, now I'm brushing, flossing, and giving up soda :)

I had a cast on both arms for 8 weeks. I broke both lower arm bones in my right arm and deformed them so it still causes me pain when I go mountain biking. I only broke one lower arm bone in my left arm so it doesn't bother me hardly at all.
See the dentist isn't so bad.lol just don't get any more cavities so you don't have to go through this again!;)

that must have hurt, but at least its healed :). I'm brushing after almost every meal now, no more cavities :D! speaking of dentist related things (i guess this is related) my finches beak is overgrown, is it safe to have a professional file it?

Yes, I would take your finch to an avian vet to have it filed down and to see if it is being caused by an illness. If you wait it can get worse and your finch may not be able to eat so I would do it sooner than later.

thanks, the guy at my local pet store has trimmed my birds beak before. Looks like Bonnie's taking a trip to the pet store :)

I've been told that you can tell them ahead of time, and they can prescribe a dose of an anti-anxiety med for the session, such as xanax. I intend to do that next time. Last time I had dental work done, I was sore all over from being so tense the whole time.
