I'm Back! What bird?

I had a BCC and she was just such a total sweetie! And yes, a great talker! My new Grey reminds me of her personality wise. I would definitely recommend them.

My Nanday is more of a playful clown. She goes from activity to activity constantly all day. She is also bossy and will try to dominate someone if she can. I haven't had a Jenday but understand personality wise they are similar to Nandays.

But each bird is unique so you can't always assume it will be one way or another. And perhaps if I had gotten Rowdy before she was 8 months old she would be more of a cuddle bunny. You do have to love them each for who they are.

Thanks! Is there anything behind them talking more or is just a myth/coincidence? It's kinda odd since they're all so closely related.

I'll be going off to college soon so that's a whole new obstacle. Hopefully I can just get a cheap apartment, but I'll need to see about dorms and pets. As far as I understand not too many allow them :/

I have a caique and he's great! He's not clingy, and can entertain himself pretty well, but is also very social.

I was looking at Caiques and they're very nice but as far as I remember over my budget ($1000 range?).

Thanks for the response though, maybe one day I can afford one.

Anyone else?

Yeah, they're expensive if you get them from a pet store. Puck's previous owner paid $1400 for him!!! I've seen ads for baby caiques from breeders though, and they're more in the $500-700 range (give or take), which is still a lot, but it's a lot better than what pet stores charge.

I was lucky to find him on Craigslist, and the nice lady who was rehoming him only asked for $450. She sold his caique buddy, who had an injured foot (healed, just funny looking, I guess) for $250. Maybe if you wait a while, somebody will want to rehome a caique for a good price. Just an idea. I got pretty lucky though.

I almost got a pionus though. That was my second choice. They seem pretty neat. :)

I have a blue crowned conure, and he has a great personality, talks and makes his own sentences, and is not a biter.
He sometimes gets a little loud, but not like a sun, and I tell him to speak and not scream and he understands it (and sometimes listens...heehee)
When he's loud, I quietly tell him to stop screaming, and he'll start yelling "stop screaming". I just look at him and say "Alex......" and he'll quietly say "sorrrrrry".
I think that you might at least research them and see if they are a good fit for you.

Most long time owners of BCs think they talk well. Why might they talk better than other conures? I don't think anyone knows. Some amazon species talk better than the others as well.

They do have a piercing screech they make to express joy. They only seem to do it once or twice a day though. My cat would make mine shut up by running up to her and glaring at her when she did it. It always worked. I never minded it, but some people do.

I think it would be hard to keep any of the aratinga conures in an apartment though. They all have at least one loud screech. A GC would be better.

Have you considered a princess of whales parakeet they are about the size of a conure, very sweetvan gentle, pretty quiet, and moderately priced. And they have a beautiful tie died color to them, sorry I didn't want to interupt the whole conure thing I just thought I should suggest it :)

Actually yes this is what I decided on yesterday, they seem the best for me. I need to find out more about my rooming and everything first before I can make the commitment.

Thanks, I've decided on the BC if I'm able to get anything. Hoping to make some kind of good deal.

What part of new york are you from? I am from pa, I can keep an ear out, are you looking for a baby, one that just needs a home, or it doesn't matter?

I did look at them, thank you for the suggestion. I like the Conures a little bit more, they remind more of that exotic feel hahaa

Long Island. I'd probably like a baby, I'd like to have it grow up and be good with me and all. THank you!

Here's what bird breeders has listed for new york, I was also looking on the long island CL page and found this amazing cage for only $100! I know you don't have your bird yet but this is a steal, I would love to have this!

Bird Breeders in New York NY - BirdBreeders.com - Avian Directory of Available Birds and Bird Breeders

corner parrot cage

Oops, I didn't realize until I posted it that somehow I must have got out of the long island section and ended up in hudson valley, darn.

Thank you!
There's a store by me that's listed there so I'll check it out soon.

Has anyone ever had a bird through college? I'm wondering if I should wait a couple more years till the near end or after.

Mark Marrone is on LI. He owns Parrots of the World pet store. I think he breeds Blue Crowns.

Yeah he is, actually that's one of my favorite places! I got my Lovebird from him a while ago, is he on this forum? I'm pretty sure he does as well, I was there last week looking around before I was considering BCs, but I'm pretty sure I saw one. It would probably be a little better economically if I can find a breeder going cheaper though, but that's always a plus in case there's no one around.
