I'm an idiot and took Merlin outside,

I agree with you MareMiller , there are too many things that can happen to the smaller parrots. I have read stories about smaller birds being caught by predators. They are way too fast and are very cunning , our birds have can have trouble with cross winds , etc.. trying to get away from therm , and that's if they actually see them before hand , which isnt always the case. What is done with smaller birds when you want to free fly is they are flown in flocks . The more eyes the better chance they have in seeing the predator before it swoops down on one of them.
Not that i suggest to do that either , but that is what I have read.

A big bird like Mr Amigo is more inclined to be passed up for smaller prey .
I pray Amigo never has the experience of being hunted at all.

Hi luvmytoo, Amigo has had the experience of being hunted. There has been a few times that I've witnessed, where a hawk has circled, hovered over and even landed in a tree where he is at. His size and prominence has thrown them off. His voice, flaring and flapping of his wings, flings up his head-dress, just for the exclamation mark! and that hawk is gone! They now just tend to fly over to get from one place to another. Therefore, I would never think it safe for a smaller bird to be out and about in the wild.

We also have some nesting ravens in the area that have no tolerance for hawks, they will move them on out.

He definitely has attitude! And it is scary for me, also. He is such an amazing bird, now, compared to what he was when he first came to me. I would rather see him happy and loving his life for how ever long it lasts, than see him locked in his cage, as unhappy as he was, for 80 yrs.

Similar thing happened to us years ago with our Grey. We had him clipped and he wasn't flying in the house so we took him outside. He flew up away and up a tree a few blocks away. A HUGE tree. It took some time but my dad borrowed a ladder from the guys house (the guy who's tree it was) and climbed up and got him. He must have been clipped improperly.
