I'm looking for some ideas of things i can give Jerry to shred up. The past couple of days i have notice him completely destroying a bits if cardboard i'm giving him.

I didn't wanna keep giving him this cardboard because of the ink and anything els that may be in it.

Has anyone got some ideas on things i could use.. Some hard sponge maybe ? would that be ok ?

Sponge would seem to be more of an ingestion hazard than paper...

I use phone books myself. My junk mail. Old catalogs (make sure there are no staples if you do this one.) Soda Boxes. Cereal boxes. Rolls of old wrapping paper. etc.

My fids love to shred cardboard, too! Maybe give him some tissue paper or plastic straws. If it's not as much fun, I believe there is bird-safe cardboard.

some paper plates that i had have kept him company for a while. He seems to love shredding things more than fighting with his wood toys.

Its like he bits it all to little bits then digs in it like a cat does after it uses the litter tray lol. its quite strange

:D He's making a nest... they are hard wired to do things like that. It's instinctive.

You should see what happens when they run off with a pair of flip flops!

Mark do tell what happens when they run off with a pair of flip flops. Pics would help. :).

I didn't take pictures of the nest they made but it was quite impressive, one phone book, two pairs of flip flops. The entire bottom of the cage was obscured by the debris field! I did keep the tattered remains of the flip flops I had carelessly left by the front door (adjoining the bird room) which was somehow interpreted as "Those are for us!" by a certain little green bird, and a certain little gray bird... (I've been meaning to post those.)

Turns out old flip flops are their absolute favorite shredder toy.

Who knew?!

I certainly didn't when I left them by the door...

I know now.

you can also use old toilet paper and paper towel rolls. My guys love them. Make a mess in no time.

Ah right. I thought he was just determined to make as much mess as possible :09:

He isn't quite brave enough to go walking round the house yet. He has only just built up enough courage to step onto my Desk on his own. He has started to climb into the box i built for him to sit in and shred all these items.

unfortunately when he was with my parents he spent 90% of his life in his cage with limited interaction. He is probs like 26+ years old so i can imagine building up his courage and trust in his new environment is gonna take a very long time.

But it will all be worth it :D :D

Poor Jerry, it's a shame he spent so much time inside a cage with little interaction. Now that he's taken those first courageous steps to investigate a box of shreddable goodies, it may not take as long as you think.

Paper lunch bags filled with shredded paper and maybe a toy or treat hidden inside is another cheap idea.
