I know you don't like rescues, but I bet there is one close to you. Volunteer @ the rescue, you could get your birdy fix on all kinds of birds.

I wish there were, but the closest one to me is about 60 miles. I don't have a problem with rescue centers. The good ones serve a purpose. But the good ones are few. The others to me are just in it for the money. They actively look for free birds, only to look for an unrealistic amount of money to re-home them. They are more concerned about the money then finding the right home for the right bird.

We visited a breeder in Englewood FL. He had tons of macaws, reminded me of a puppymill for parrots, but the guy knew his stuff. I bet if you look around you could find a breeder near you.

I have found a few breeders within 35 miles of me, but they all will only allow me to visit their birds is if I put a deposit down on a bird. They want to limit the amount of people that have access to their birds to keep them from catching illnesses.

Although that sucks, I can understand. The other reason for breeders keeping people out unless necessary is many are pretty secretive about their location to prevent thefts. People go in under the guise of looking for a bird in order to get the location and a chance scope out the set up to look for security measures, and return later to thieve. Any chance of volunteering at a rescue? Maybe you have an avian park kind of like what we have near us (in reality just a collection of huge aviaries open to the public, but still pretty neat to check out!) where they might have a tame macaw?

Mtdoramike, Just wanted to give you more info on meeting Macaws and other Parrots. Google Bird Fanciers in Central Florida, You will see many bird clubs in your area so you can visit them uasualy for free and most bird clubs bring their birds to the meeting as a social gathering, this is how I started here in MD by visiting then joining the Baltimore Bird Fanciers, you get lots of free info, meet all types of wonderful Parrots. There is Florida Parrot Rescure in Orlando. I know they have Macaws. A 94 year old man just died that have a nice macaw and that is where he went. If you want their information please let me know.

Mtdoramike, 60 miles is nothing. Call me crazy, I live in MD, My Breeder lives in southern VA approx 200 miles away. When both my boys hatched, I drove every weekend to visit my boys and watched them as they grew. I handled them a lot so they would be used to me when I brought them home after being weaned. I did this for approx 9 months per Parrot. Bird people do some crazy things for our birds and I guess I was no different.
If you are able to locate and bird fancier club, you wil find many types of parrots and all kinds of Macaws. Even if you travel 60 miles, you may meet someone there who may live close to you. Club members can also guide you in the right direction to meet Macaws and their owners in your area.
Bird Fancier clubs are filled with info, you can even call them to see if a member is in your area that you can visit.
