I want to hold your claw

Parrots
Clyde, Quaker; Freddie, tiel; Rocky, umbrella cockatoo.
Rocky goes to bed at dark but doesn't go to sleep until we go to bed. When I peek under his cover to say good night, he sometimes reaches out with one foot and opens and closes it. If I give him my hand, he grasps my finger and squeezes. I's cute, but puzzling. None of the other parrots does anything like that.

Merlin does the same thing! He always does it before bed, but also throughout the day. He will either hold my finger or if he's close enough, he'll reach for my head/face. I think he might want me to give him scritches OR he wants to give ME scritches. We use our hands to preen him, after all, and he might be attempting to doing the same. Or maybe he's asking to be picked up? Either way, it's adorable.

It could just be a cockatoo thing. LOL

Chiqui reaches for me through the cage bars if I am just stopping by to tell her I love her. I
Know she is asking to come out but she will literally reach for my hand. So cute it makes me melt.

Alice is a keen hand holder too - it's not a want to step up thing because in the morning I'll offer my hand for her to step up and she'll hold a finger for a few seconds first. When I first met her she wanted to hold my finger through the cage bars - that was probably the moment I knew she was coming home with me! She also likes to roll on her back and grab my finger with her feet, at which point I lift my and and she squeaks excitedly whilst dangling in mid air...

Objectively though I've noticed a lot of cockatoos like to do it. I met a galah and a U2 that wanted to hold hands this month (kind of intimidating surrendering your finger to a bird that could chip off the tip in a quick chomp!). Is a very endearing quality.

My grey does the same thing and hangs on, running his beak over my hand and making little noises. So endearing.

You're right, jayyj. It's not really a request to step up. He deliberately reaches out for my finger and squeezes. He'd be perfectly content to stay that way if I let him. Makes my heart melt.

I think it's a cockatoo thing. Poppy loves holding hands through the cage bars. I've seen other U2's do the same thing. It is very endearing.

Oh yes, the gentle caress of a Cockatoo claw! Whatever the meaning, it is a most human trait, yet another reason they are so deeply loved!

my recently past GCC did that frequently. He lifted his foot and spread out his toes. I would offer my little finger and he would grip it for a few seconds and then let me go. Miss him a lot but on happier note, going to pick up a newly weaned GCC on Saturday. its been way to quiet around here.

I'm so sorry for your loss, but so glad you are bringing another bird into your life. Please post pics when he comes home!

Now that sounds like a Amazon thing!!! I don't trust Gonzo either, he'll suck me in and go for the kill!!

I love this post! my issue is when I wake up and open the cage door by my bed, a few minutes later I have a conure sitting on my lips so my warm breath from my nose is flowing over his feet, it's not even cold. Then comes the "come on" "come on" I need to stop letting him out first thing...........sigh... like I could stop.
