I want a blue crowned conure

I would love to get a conure. My only problem is I work 10hrs a day monday through friday. Im also single. The only time I would be able to provide attention for my bird is evenings and weekends. I would try to devote all my free time to my bird but maybe this isnt enough. I dont want him bored all day and lonely while im at work. Im not going to do this unless I am sure my bird will have a good quality life. Im up to the challenge but just wondering if its the right thing to do.

I don't think being alone 10 hours a day would be ok, maybe someone else can weigh in on that

Parrots are like 5 year old kids, they are VERY VERY Smart
(about 4th on the list of intelligence, right under Dolphins, Elephants, and Chimps)

Could you come home for lunch to see the bird every day?

No I couldnt come home for lunch. I have thought of having recordings of me talking to him that would play at certain times of the day but that probably wouldn't be enough. Of course I would have lots of toys and a large cage as well.

One other thing to keep in mind is you might want to go out after work or on the weekend and a solitary bird would have to spend even more time alone. Can you get two conures? They could keep each other company during the day and you could still bond with them when you're home. Parrots are flock birds and shouldn't really be alone.

Ya I think you're right. Would I need to get another conure or could I get something smaller maybe a budgie or parotlet and put their cages side by side? I would think it would be comforting to him if he knew there was a bird next to him especially if they could become friends and talk at eachother. Would this be ok or should I just get two blue crowns and have them in the same cage?

From my experience, budgies and conures don't really interact too much. Better to have two conures in the same cage.

Maybe you could get a rehomed green cheek conure! You could get the Blue crowned from wherever you were going to get it from and rescue a green cheek! They are adorable easy well I mean easy in the coure way.... But ya I love love looovvvee my greenie! They are so smart too! And maybe your thinking well I don't want to spend a lot... Well I got mine for 15 dollars at the animal shelter! So maybe think of adopting one? The Blue crown would enjoy another conure!

But it might be a good idea to keep them in a separate cage.

That's what I was worrying about, having two birds in the cage so they're not alone is really not a substitute for the time you would be spending with the bird

They would still be cage bound birds, because of the amount of time they spend together most likely they would bond to each other and want very little to do with you

My children and I recently bought a Green wing Macaw, one of the terms we had to agree on as a family was that we would not go away on a trip or vacation if we could not bring the bird with us

Would you be able to work with the birds out of the cage two hours a day? Are you a homebody? would you be going away on weekends?

These are questions you have to ask yourself

My suggestion would be IF your heart is not absolutely set on the BCC, look into a Poicephalus parrot... I have a Red Bellied, and Senegals and Meyer's are beautiful and popular too.
The reason I suggest this, is because these birds are "naturally" better at being an only bird (Robin was for years at a time, and even resented other birds, which is common in Poi's).

Poicephalus in the wild are found usually in no bigger than a family group, and they are by nature more independent with their toys when you have to be absent, whereas Conures in the wild are a highly social species that congregate in HUGE flocks.
