Lilo - Female Green Cheek Conure ~ Pal - male cockatiel ~ Pheobe - female cockatiel
I'm very concerned, one of her little feet is having a hard time grasping on to things! I'm trying to see if maybe she will get better but I don't know. :( if anyone has an idea of what might be wrong, that would be great. I don't know how old she is but I'm very scared and the only vet that will be beneficial is an hour and a half away! Maybe she will get better but has this ever happened to one of your fids????? I love her more then anything and I can totally afford a vet but last time I brought her, she was fine so my parents are apprehensive about it. Please help! :rainbow1:

I think you should take her, if you can afford it and are worried go for it. If a human suddenly couldn't grip well with one hand it could be very bad! No question about seeing a doctor. If nothing is wrong you'll feel great relief when the vet tells you so ;)

Ok she is acting fine otherwise, hungry, happy, playful and is doing her happy dance but your right, I will try to persuade my parents!

Agreed I would try and take her, that could be symptomatic of many things. Is she limping or just not gripping? Is she holding it up when she stands? When did it start?

She has been limping for a long time, she at the time had gotten her toe stuck in the door but I don't know if that's the problem.... Today, when she sits her foot is coiled under her.... :(:(:( I have been crying all day I don't know what I'm going to do because if it's arthritis then that means that she's an old bird then will she have more health problems??? What if it $1000 surgery or death, what am I going to do?? I will pay all the money in the world for her but i don't know what my limit will be??? Oh my goosshhh!! :( what if it's cancer or maybe a broken foot or something horriable like that???

first of all please take a deeeeep breath. It's ok to cry, but please try not to panic.
it could be any number of things, but we don't know what is causing this.

is it red underneath?
swollen?
any discolouration?
is she chewing at it(like it's bothering her)
is she still behaving normally..ie: playing, flying, eating, poop ok?

you say she caught it in a door??....OUCH, maybe it's just tender.....

can you post a good picture of it?

I do know metal toxicity can cause birds to be unable to grasp things with their feet, but again it is just speculation.

KQ- please take her to a vet, then you will have your answers, and it will make you feel much much better!!

You poor thing! Your fear and panic is obvious from your posts. Please try to remain calm - remember Lilo can sense your emotions and IF there's something wrong (I pray there isn't) being upset because her mommy is so upset won't help her.

Crimson asks some very good questions. Let's see the answers to those and see what the experienced parronts think.

I think it will be best to take her to the vet - if there's something that needs the vet's attention, he can sort it out for you. And if there's nothing wrong apart from maybe a tender foot, your peace of mind is worth the trip.

((Hugs))

Wait, she could be poisoned?????? What kind of metal is that and where is it found in???? And the coloring of the skin is very normal and yes she does chew on it. Do you think she's going to die??? :( I can't tell if its swollen but I really don't think so. I went on a three week vacation on new years and before I left she was perfectly fine but when I got back.... she wasn't... oh and she isn't very loud in the morning anymore. She used to wake me up at about six thirtyish but now I wake up before her. She is still alert, eats, drinks, plays, does he play dance so I don't know what to think.

And like what do I do about a vet??? The best one is very far away and there is one that I go to for her yearly check ups but they only do physicals and the other one does x-rays and things like that. But I can't loose her too not after I lost mango! If I loos her, I will be a mess... :( she makes me happy when I'm having a hard time! She is the only thing I care about well her and my bunny Joey! And he's old to! So then if I loos her then Joey... :(

Oh and I have no idea how to post pictures on here...

Right now when she stands on it she starts chewing on it like it hurts..

My mom and dad want to give it more time before we rush off to the vets but how much time do I have???

You should try as soon as possible to the good vet that's further away. Don't panic until you get your baby checked out.

Ok I will really try to persuade my parents to let me go, they don't understand that birds are not as sustainable as dogs and cats.

we don't know....kq, PLEASE CALM DOWN, you cannot absorb anything from the advice on here if you are well.....hysterical....I mean that in the nicest way of course.

look I've been there, remember???.....lots of us have....so we understand....
But please remember we are not vets.

may be a fibre is caught around one of her nails or ankle.

remain calm so you can really assess what her ankle looks like, so you can help him..ok?

Ok so I will call the vet that is far away and get an x-ray and I will look at her ankle and claws and toes. And crimson I know that you wouldn't say anything mean to anyone and yes I am overreacting and I am sorry for that... and no you guys are not vets or anything but you guys do have good advise and what you guys are saying is that I need to bring her to the vet and that is what I will try to do.

Crimson gave you good advice. Check for a fiber / string that could be constricting bloodflow. Will Lilo let you look under her foot? Maybe it is sore from a rough perch you might have in the cage? Is it the same color as the other foot? Do what you can, jot down notes to show the vet when you see him. Try to remember every detail that happened before now, even though it seems silly. It can help your vet draw a more specific conclusion.

Try do do what you can for now. Keep her warm, pad the bottom of her cage. Remove any rough perches if you have any. Check for threads. It will be okay!

One is more pink and one is black. I looked at her feet but it was hard she is very particular about her feet. And if this is a problem one foot, the one that hurts has longer claws then the other and I do remember when her claws got long and it hurt her and she kept chewing on it so maybe they need to be clipped!

Well on the bottom of her little feetsies, one is a pink reddish and the one that hurts is normal and pale. Hmmm

she is going to bed now so I can't check her anymore so we will see tomorrow how she is feeling!

Were you able to check her ankle/foot for hairs, or strings that might have wrapped around?

Shame, I feel for you and poor Lilo! Stay strong and assess the situation in the morning.
Try not to panic too much. ((Hugs))

As others say, go to the Vet! However don't fret too much. I had a Kakariki (same size as a GCC) snap her leg bone right in half. Vets could do surgery, but with such small birds theres a high chance it could not wake up... So not wirth the risk.

I kept her in a tiny cage with pine wood shavings and chopped hay, plus a very low steady perch so she couldn't move much. Her leg fully healed a month later. She nibbled on it a lot for the first week as it hurt a lot. Your Lilo's behaviour isn't worrying to me, but it is concerning enough to warrant a Vet visit. Could be just sore or a break. Either way it could be nothing to worry about. I mean, when we get our toes or fingers jammed we tend to favor them a lot. I know it's hard but try to stay calm. If the Vet says its something to worry about, you can worry then.

how is she this morning Kinny?....better I hope

her 'pale' foot could mean lack of blood flow

is it cold to touch? or is it hot?

this may not have to do with her food at all, and her 'issue' could be higher up, you might want to check up the leg and under her belly.
