Hi im new here I started posting yesterday in the alexandrine forum. Yesterday I took on my first bird and was told he was a 7-8month alexandrine that belonged to my partners nanna he didnt seem happy there and she didnt have the time for him she had him for 4 month and got him from someone who also had no time and said he was 3 month old.
I quickly realised he was older from researching as he already has his ringneck markings. I have now uploaded a picture on fb and have been told he is a ringneck not an alexandrine!
He is very nervous and if I try to go near cage open it or put food through bars he panics and flys around.
I have ordered a new cage as his is old and belonged to another parrot. Im hoping we can give him a new start and eventually gain his trust. If anyone has any advice at all it would be greatly appreciated as I am feeling very overwhelmed at the minute and want to do my best for him

welcome to the forum lilamy.

could you post a picture of him so we can confirm?

If he has 'ring neck markings' he's much older than 4 mo.

A pic would be helpful :) does he have red on his wings? Alex's have red on their wings,

Hello, welcome to the forum. I am not familiar with ringnecks or alexandrinse, but I'm sure people will help you with some ideas.
Wish you very good luck with your new feathered friend.

A different, head on angle would be nicer, but he looks like an IRN.how thick are his markings? Could you get a different pose? If their in real thick he's at least 2 years +

My IRN loves peanuts, if that helps.

He is a bit camera shy haha tried to post some I took yesterday where can see markings better. We have just transferred him to new cage so I dont want to bother him too much

So far he loves apple ive just put a melon and grape kebab in so will see if he likes them but will get some nuts and try them thanks. He lil bit more confident in new cage sitting on perch more and has just tweeted again! We have sprayed him for first time he didn't like us opening cage but sat still to be sprayed

Ok, the second pic his ringneck looks VERY dark. Has he had that since you got him? If I had to take a guess, he's at least 2 years, probably 3
That sounds like a good plan! My IRN loooovvveesss grapes

I only got him yesterday but partners nanna had him for 4 month im waiting to here back if markings changed while she had him and previous owner had him for short while before so we trying to get in touch with them to. I think he has either never been handled or trained or has been hurt cos he is terrified if u put your hand near him but seems quite happy by himself in the cage. My worry is he could be years old.

Well he is definitely older than you thought... IRNs are smart birds though, so he'll learn to trust you.

Ah good I hope so we dont know much never had birds before but are doing our best to read to up. We have bought all new stuff cos we want him to have a fresh start and we are prepared to give him as much time as we possibly can. My partner is keen to try letting him out cage and stuff but I dont want to rush him as he is still so nervous but so far so good he is more confident with us walking past cage before he went straight to back of cage but now generally stays on perch x

That's good to hear,

Have you done target training? He'd probably react very well to that.

Also, I'm not sure if you knew this, but alexadrines and IRNs both are non-pair forming birds. They can form a bond, but they aren't quite as monogamous as other parrots, and will take a new mate if they are separated after breeding.

Basically, he will form a bond with you, however, it won't be anything near conures. That said, he also will get over his old owners faster, with less emotional damage compared to a conure.

I have just been watching a video on how to use target stick and clicker looks great at the min even going close to cage freaks him out so I think this could be difficult as he wont take treats from us if our hands go anywhere near him he flys around but im going to order a clicker and im trying him with all different fruits and treats to see what he likes best in hopes we could work towards this with him but think I might give him couple weeks just to get used to surrounding but if anyone has better ideas im opening to trying anything!!

For a food diet, my cousins IRNs like peanuts, apples, broccoli, and grapes. So maybe try feeding it those!

What about shop bought treats? I have seen various ones that look like sweets and even pots of jelly but r these just gimmicks?
