Hi, I'm Malak and I'm a new owner of two cockatiels, Grey a 1 1/2 year old male and Joy a 1 year old female... My friend gave them to me on 12/28/2016 because she doesn't have enough time to take care of them... She gave them to me with three eggs about 17 days old, but sadely the eggs didn't hatch as Joy was so afraid and terrified of her new surrounding and she didn't take care of the eggs and she left them alone in the nest for 2 days without sitting on them, so my mom and I removed them from the nest 2 days after I got them... 2 days ago, the 2 birds start behaving abnormally, at about 8 pm Joy enters the nest and sleeps in to the next day, I don't see Grey all day but he showes up at 8 pm the time that Joy enters the nest and he sleeps normally on a perch... Now, I was checking on them and changing the water, I noticed that their droppings are very smelly (not a bad smell just strange smell) and their droppings were large extremely large... Is that sign of illness but they are eating very well.
I'll be thankfull If you tell me what's wrong with them.
Thank you

The smell shouldn't have changed, but it could just be that the larger droppings take longer to dry, and thus you are noticing the smell now but didn't before. But, as with all new birds, it would be wise to take them to the vet.

Other than that, yes, it sounds like they are getting ready to lay eggs again. Please remove their nest to prevent this. I am not opposed to breeding them (I myself breed parrots) but it is not something to undertake lightly, and especially not for a new bird owner. Attaching below an article that should be helpful in explaining how to prevent them from producing again, as well as why that's important. The article focuses on single birds, though I intend to write one for people keeping pairs as well.

Thank you for replying,
I'll try to take them to the vet as soon as possible...
I'll check the nest in the morning, if it still empty I'll remove it...
Thank you again 😄

When the parents are incubating eggs and staying in the nest all night it is normal for them to retain there poop until they come out. The will not normally poop in the nest box. When they come out and go poop it is very large for such a small bird.

When my birds were incubating eggs this happened but I never noticed any smell so a vet visit would be a good idea.

good luck

I've read somewhere that it's normal to have a smelly droppings from a female before she lay eggs.

But, from an awful experience, take them to the vet to have a check-up.

Good luck!
