What a beautiful bird! I hope he feels better soon. He also might be in a better mood once he's not sick anymore. He sounds like a handful!

He's definitely a handful lol.

congratulations and thank you for taking him, he will have a much better life now :)

He is soo beautiful, has he got a name? :)

and playing all those instruments you do need your fingers!!! hahah

Already looking for a new cage... might just have one built. Idk.. or recondition this one.. sand blast it and get it repaired.. leave the paint off..

No band aids lol..

Nuts.. yep got those for my other macaw and my amazon..and we crack em for the sun :)

Leaving the paint off is just going to cause it to rust which it is highly bad for birds to lick off any rust period as macaws LOVES to chew and lick everything. A new cage is highly suggested!!!!

I've seen quite a few hybrids but I have not seen a Ruby in person yet. It would be quite interesting to see one.

IF you can, try to perch train him. As long as you can get him away from the cage to a play stand, it's a lot easier to train when they're away from their cage. I'm sure you've learned from your Scarlet already that macaws can be tricksters. They will lower their heads letting you think they want a pet and when you try, they come up and try to beak you....lol.....

Hey fellow Texan, congrats on your gorgeous boy! I adore greenwings & am still looking for the one that wants to come live with me & my flock. I know he is a hybrid, but he looks so like a greenwing. I hope for the best with his illness. It is good that you took him in when you did or he probably would not have lived for long being so sick.

I have 2 hybrid Catalina macaws & I wouldn't take for them. Macaws are the clowns of the parrot world in my opinion.

Thanx guys... oddly his name is meanie.. really?? But he doesn't appear to know... well... anything. Poor guy has been in a cage his entire life.

Vet says its too close to call right now, but we're thinking he will pull through..

Does anybody have a website that they use to get their birds cages through?? I may nit have the time to go to Houston or Louisiana to get one ..so ordering may be the best bet.

I have never order any cage since we have a distributor that comes to the bird fair twice a year and there's two bird clubs that holds fairs so that's 4 times a year I can attend and buy supplies..

He's a big boy.. he's a bit bigger than Monte.. and way more aggressive... he's all about getting you to pet, then getting ya..:eek::eek:

AWESOME news about his health!

AAAW..in time you'll be kissing that big beak of his. :D
I'm working towards it... but wow.. he is sooooooo aggressive.. he's sweet and docile, then he's trying to bite.. if it wasn't my livelihood at risk.. it wouldn't be a huge deal.. but of i can't play, I don't eat lol.. and neither do the other birds lol.

I would guess that he just needs time to trust you then. I just watched a video on biting that said "Don't adress the behaviour, adress why the behaviour is occuring". She said that unwarned bites are a learned behaviour brought on by negative reenforcement. I don't know if that helps, but if you've done everything you can to adress causes for biting, then it's probably just a waiting game. Just make sure you reward good behaviours so he'll focus on that instead; you'll have a birdies best friend in no time!

I can imagine playing guitar that you will need those fingers LOL! My first bird was a teased Catalina Hybrid; Doogie. I got him when he was 4; he is 19 now. I am here to say that macaws CAN be rehabilitated and Doogie was a serious biter in the beginning. Consider it a real challenge and that mentally you are not going to let this bird defeat you no matter what. In the end you will be rewarded with a loving beautiful pet. From your pictures I don't see too much hybrid there; he really looks just like a Scarlet. Once he settles in and makes friends with your other bird he may take his mind off of sitting there and plucking so that he will really be beautiful

Glad he is getting better healthwise. He needs time to adjust to a new owner, home & getting over his illness. I know you know all this already, but he will adjust. I takes a good amount of time when they have been neglected or ignored. It will take him a while to learn to trust you. Sometimes when they are reluctant to handling, you have to ease off a bit and let him have his space.

My special needs Catalina is a sweet boy, but if he doesn't feel like coming out to play on his perch, he will climb away & try to bite my hand. Then the stinker screams about not being out with his door open & the play perch waiting for him to come out on his own.

I hope everything works out for you. Greenwings & I know he is not full blood, are gorgeous macaws. I just think they are beautiful creatures!

From this blurry pic you can see some of the hybrid colors on him.. sort of.

He's sure big compared to my other scarlet... my vet says Monte is a scarlet and this bird is a ruby.. or an over fed red snapper...jk on that..

I spent some time with him today.. stick training..he gets up on the stick and shuffles towards my hands..he tries to step up, but I don't trust him..he'll step up and then he'll open me up like a can of biscuits, I can tell.

When he's able to be around the other birds, I hope he learns off of them. Idk.. until he settles down some, I won't risk him being around my family/flock. Don't get me wrong, I will work with him, but I won't risk my other avian friends health..

This bird is as powerful as a raptor..I felt his talons today.. they're not shaped or designed for the same purposes, but I'm here to tell you that this bird is big and strong...
Once we become friends, it shouldn't be a big deal, but as for now.. its just slow going.. its not the poor birds fault.. :D

He might of been fine coming to your hands as long as you read their body language properly. I'm glad you got him onto a stick, that's a good way to start!!!!

I hopped in the check out the prices on the cages on both sites. All I can is WOW, how expensive......

IF you can get to a local distributor, it's A LOT cheaper!!! For example, the dome top A&E cage 40x30 they want $504.88 I paid $320 for the same exact cage and that's with TN tax 9.75% at the distributor's house about 2hrs away, but here in Nashville where he does visit Tax is at 9.25%. That's close to $200 difference in price.
