Monte..Scarlet macaw, Seminole...yellow napped amazon, Starburst... sun conure...Rain, cinnamon green cheek.
I have a scarlet macaw, Monte :) since I'm his 3rd or so owner, he's a little.. misunderstood :) but we're great friends for the most part lol.. but I'm being offered a scarlet and green wing mix.. the person says its commonly called a big red... because the bird is HUGE and looks like a greenwing..

I've never heard of a big red, but the bird is also very aggressive... very quick to bite from not being handled a lot and or mistreated... I'm not about to let the poor thing be put down, he's 16... he just needs love... I need my finger though lol..

So my question is, am I just slow to year about the big reds? The bird is pretty large.. he makes my scarlet look like an amazon...fun times ahead... ouch :p

Yep that'd be him... he so precious  lol.. I say that because i have a bigger Monte on my hands.. come here... bite... yep.. its love...

Thanx for the help :)

I'm not going to BS you, I've NEVER heard of a Big Red. But I would NEVER allow a 16 year old Mac to be put down either ;) If you have the room and the means, GO FOR IT! A little TLC will go a LONG way!

Now there's a rant coming on: WHO in their right (birdy) mind would put a HEALTHY mac down for behavioral reasons?????? For whatever reasons he "misbehaves" there MUST be a reason.

Poor guy! So please..pretty please. If you can, TAKE HIM, and give him a chance. :) You might be oh-so-surprised how he may "be" after he learns what TRUST is all about :)

He's a big boy... wow...he's coming to the front of the cage now... I guess a little blood goes a long way? Gave him a walnut and he's saying hello now..

Pray for my digits please :)

He's a ruby.. or so it seems.. either way, he needs a friend :) I wonder how Monte will feel about this?

Good on you, 94lt1 !!! He needs proper love and care and plenty of attention. Life dealt him a terrible hand. You're his savior!

Please keep us updated on him. Let us know as soon as you learn the prognosis for his respiratory issue.

Thank you so much!!!

While the vet had him gassed I took the opportunity to handle him, he actually seemed to try to cuddle before darkness took him :)

The vet is thinking sack mites.. port bird.. I'm having the vet hold on to him for a few days and get him going in the right direction.. I'm being cautious, but I think no this big knuckle head can be a great bird.. he just needs some tlc. And,

I need some welders gloves...

Make sure he gets his 6 week quarantine from the other birds too, especially if he's been confirmed as carrying something. Keep him in a different room, wash your hands, maybe even change cloths between him and your birds.

Karigan is correct, please quarantine your Ruby Macaw.
Thank you for taking them in and giving them a loving home.
Due to their age 16, you will really need to work with them.
The Ruby has the best and worse of the world. They have the sweetness of the Green Wing and Nippy personality of the Scarlet. With a lot of work and handling, perhaps you can bring out the Green Wing in them.
Please keep us posted.
Never underestimate the power of their beak. The Green Wing has approx 200 lbs of preasure and can very easy hurt you, your hands, and fingers so keep them out of their reach until you are able to handle and completely bond with them. Keep us posted. Thanks again Joe
