Gilbert Oliver, Blue Crown Conure; Georgie, Sun Conure (2/8/01-8/8/12) RIP little girl; Percy, budgie 1993-1999. RIP Pepito-spanish timbrado canary
Gilbert's hatchday is in ONE WEEK. He is a July 4th baby, so i'll have a long weekend off work to celebrate with him.

I was thinking of 'birthday cake' ideas for him that we would ALL enjoy and it fails in one way or other. (i used to bake all my dog's cakes and i didn't find them too tasty--humans are used to SWEET cakes, let's face it.) But i'll figure something out that we all like that i can make 'festive'.

I just can't believe he is going to be a year old!! He is still such a baby to me. I look at his pics from baby to confident little man and can't believe how he has grown in personality! :)

Oh that baby picture is just TOO cute for words!!! And look how Gil grew into SUCH a gorgeous, adventurous, loving boy. :) (Yes, I said boy...MUCH too young to be called "man". ;) )

He's so lucky to have you in his life!

That baby pic won me over. They sent me three photos with the dates/his age at the time and i thought he was just adorable! I feel so much like we were meant to be together. The aviary where he came from hadn't had a blue crown baby in a couple years (i don't think they had any this year either). Gilbert was the one surprise blue crown baby they got in a number of years, and he was available right when i was looking. Meant to be. :)

Happy birthday Gil. How about a cornbread with some corn and green chilies in it? and mayby some shredded cheddar cheese on top.:)

i was thinking of cornbread (because i love it so much, haha). he is also crazy about fruit and i thought of the red/white/blue strawberry/blueberry shortcakes people make and i could give him the berries and eat the cake myself. ;) I think for his meal i will make all his favorite foods and put them in his bowl. (pasta, beans, cabbage, carrots, etc)

Sounds like a great plan. I love cornbread too and so don't everyone of my birds:)

SO, we did an unofficial hatchday celebration last night! I heard fireworks and a lot of people had unofficial July 4 bbqs so I figured it was legitimate. ;) Besides I had just been to the store and had fresh berries and 'stuff' in the house with Gilbert's hatchday in mind.
I wanted it to be a wee bit decadent, so I got plain yogurt and mixed it with almond butter, spooned into a dessert cup (like angel food cake) and sliced banana, strawberry and blueberries in it. As it turned out the almond butter and strawberry is his favorite part.
I must have had an absent minded day yesterday because I accidentally bought the almond butter that was salted, not just plain almonds, AND, I lit a birthday candle. He was scared of the candle and then I thought 'how stupid of me, lighting a candle around him?!' I don't know what I was thinking. I won't do that for the next celebration for sure.
I put a few pics on Flickr of him over the past few days--and i'm sure i'll have to get a special pic on his first hatchday too. He has a lot of reddish brown on the back of his head.....I thought that was a juvenile blue crown thing? not sure.

What great pictures!!!! I love the one where it says "Happy 1st Hatchdate, Gilbert!" GREAT picture, and you sure went all out on this special occasion. :) And boy did I laugh at the picture where Gil's head is in the Almond butter jar. :D

So did I....I looked away and looked back and saw him in there like that. I snapped some pics before I moved it! He just followed that jar all over, once he discovered how good it was.
He is a big fan of strawberries so I also knew that would be a big hit.
