Senegal-Martini,1 pineapple conure~ Kahlua,1 GCC~ Flare, spl/b, 4 Lovebirds Halo,Tye-Die,Luna,Violet,8 Cockatiels,Num Num&Tundra,8-Ball&Angus,Magnet&Sunkist,Pearl, Blush, 1 gouldian finch, 7 canaries
like the title says "I'm done!"

my other pair that was sitting on eggs today tossed one of their chicks out of the nest and I almost stepped on it when I walked into the bird room:eek::eek:

the other baby was near dead in the nest.(which died later)
I took MikeyTNs' advice and ran off to our grocery store to buy live bacteria organic yoghurt, which disrupted our dinner (steak, fried potatos, and fresh corn)
my husband freaked out on me started yelling at me while I ran out the door.....doesn't he understand I have to save this little one!!!???? geez....

so now I have another little wee gouldian, and I am not even sure this one will make it either. I don't know how long it was on the carpet for, when it hatched, etc... all I know is it wasn't on the floor this morning.

I am so done with trying to breed gouldian finches.I've had my fair share of dead chicks, and just can't take it anymore. I have to admit I'm feeling a little defeated right now, and sad as well.

If I trade both pairs I can hopefully get a female conure for my male Java.
here is a picture of another little baby gouldian.
BTW, Num Num goes in for his check up tomorrow, I'll keep you posted on the outcome:confused:

Two of those eggs in the nest looks like that are attached. The baby is cute :)

Yes, it looks like two fused eggs, and there's this big egg in the mix, what is going on? Is that the egg hatching basket? :)

This is why many breeders use society finches to sit on the eggs and raise the young.

it's not that simple. societies will only sit on eggs if they are nesting themselves.
some pairs will sit on any eggs given to them, nesting or not, but most only sit on eggs if they have their own.
I had a previous pair that were useless, so I traded them for another more reliable pair. they have only been here a week or so, and not settled in enough to start fostering.
depending on age and experience, some refuse to foster at all

I'm so sorry! What an awful, dispiriting experience for you! Sending warmest thoughts your way - and hugs!

Omg...not again....I hope you can save this little wee one!!!! Stuff your husbands mouth with egg shell if he yells at you again trying to save the baby's life. :D

we were testing how quickly the yoghurt comes out of the syringe, ha ha
my other cockatiel is laying infertile eggs, and my daughter wanted to put it against the finch eggs to compare sizes.

I have a infertile pair and I'm pretty sure its the female that's infertile. But she's a great momma. I use them to foster other tiels when I need them to.

I have sold all 5 gouldian finches!!, 3 went today, and 2 on Friday.

now I can put that money to good use and buy a female pineapple conure for my male who is very lonely ;)

I am kind of sad you sold off your Gouldians but also can understand with giving up on them. It has been hard on you with them?

One door closes and another opens. Will you give the attempt to breed the pineapple conure? That would be exciting. I would so get one from you if I was in your country. I understand they make good pets and are not as loud. I don't think anything I would get could be as loud as Valentino. OMG..he is LOUD.

I bet your babies are so tame they make wonderful companions. I wish you the best with pineapple conure breeding.

How is the last chick doing? Were you able to have better success adding in yogurt?

thanks Rebecca-

yes that one door closing was rather hard, but out of 16 babies, only 2 remain, those are just terrible odds, and it was time. I just couldn't take it anymore. Too many things went wrong, just back luck really.

The last remaining chick is doing well, and yes I started him off with the yoghurt. Sarah came up with the name YOLO.(You Only Live Once)
I love that name, it's so positive and uplifiting:D:D
....and yes the female will be for breeding, and I can't wait to have chicks.
my babies and my pet birds are super friendly, and usually greet anyone who walks thru the bedroom door. You should see the looks on their faces, it's priceless!!....I always get a kick out it too;)

After taking Jaxon to the vet today to get him neutered, went to do my insurance thing at the doctor's office, and picking up Jaxon from the vet then I came home and crashed. I've fallen ill last night and very ill today but I've been thinking of your babies and wonder how your little wee one is doing. Please keep me up to date if he makes it through. I'm typing while all wrapped up in blanket on the couch... ;)

Mikey I hope you feel better, it sounds like you have the flu.
he is really good, and I mean really good.
normally by now the babies are starting to deteriorate, but not him, he's still turning his head from side to side wanting food, little piggy, and digesting it properly:D
Sarah wanted to name him Yolo(You Only Live Once),,, it thought it was perfect!, very positive too.
I'll know in the next day or two if he's still ok.
I have no idea why I never did the yoghurt sooner.

thanks for asking, and get some sleep

I've slept plenty today! Laying on the couch with dogs right now while watching dancing with the stars. ;)

I still have one of my babies here that is now 7-8 weeks old, plus the one I'm feeding. so I'll enjoy them until they colour up some which will be another 4-5 months, then I will find out what sexes they are.....they are like little surprise boxes!!, ha ha

Do you have any society finches? A friend of mine used to breed all kinda of small rare finches and canaries, whenever a pair wasn't sitting on eggs, or neglected chicks, she would place them in a society nest and they raised the baby. They were amazing parents! Much better than the other species who, like your own, were terrible parents.

Her society finches would raise anything, once they even raised a northern cardinal egg she had found in a nest that fell from a tree! They worked tirelessly to feed the chick that was larger than themselves. The bird grew to adulthood, and did very well.

Copper,

She's tried that already but they didn't do well....depends on the pairs I think but its what I've always known is to use society finch to foster.
