Hybrid Mini Macaws

Does anyone know there are no record of anyone making hybrid mini macaws? There are hybrids of the big macaws but none of the minis. Why is that? Scientific reasoning? Any avian vets know why?

They can be done, they just aren’t popular like large macaw hybrids. So breeders dont make them. Or even conure x mini macaws.

I'm thankful there aren't more hybrids around, its essential in todays world that we keep bloodlines of species pure for generations to come. I currently work with 2 different species of Finches that have suffered the effects as the result of intentional hybridization…...and getting these species back to pure for is a lot of frustrating work!

There's a term called 'Hybrid vigor' and with the large macaws that term is relevant to the colour of the birds breeders are trying to achieve with hybridizing 2 different species - To essentially get more better colour and also achieve some better behavior characteristics as well.

With the mini macaws and how their colour is predominately green, crossing two green species together is just going to give you more green birds! In reality the only time you're going to see hybrid mini macaws is if the breeder was unaware and they crossed completely accidentally.

My experiences with mini-macaws has been very different than what I have had with standard macaws. From what I can tell (and this is not a blanket statement), they can be different in terms of personality/behavior and I know all birds are unique, but "mini macaw" is misleading to an extent-- especially because the ones I have known were unlike any typical macaws, despite the name.

Hear! Hear! Kudos for great message! Which two species of Finch do you breed?

I'm working with Aberdeen finches (which were hybridised with cutthroats) and the Javan (aka White bellied) Munia (which were hybridised with the Bengalese Mannikin). Both are incredibly rare birds in Australia currently, and even rarer in pure forms! The Javan Munias I keep are some of the very last pure birds left in Australia and I bred 2 the other day which is fantastic for the species survival in Australia
