We're getting hit....Some areas have declared a state of emergency. A lot of roads closed, bridges underwater, washouts. Expected power outages. I can't wait for this day to be over!!!

Oh my gosh that's terrible! I'll be praying!

Oh Sharon! :(

I wish safety for you, your family and friends. I hope it's over soon for you.

Well, the worst is over! We were without power for 5 hours, so not too bad. A lot of the province is still without power. I hope the fish tanks don't have an Ammonia spike...According to reports, this is the worst storm ever to hit here. The wind was scary, even for me, and I don't scare easily!

The birds fared well, although Fred was nervous. He wouldn't leave his cage, unless he was cuddled into my neck! Levi, on the other hand, spent the morning in his window, with the rain beating against it. Tough bird, my Levi!

wicked demon...the ocean is beautiful....but also dangerous. I grew up playing on the seashore. I now live in a Central area, so do not see the ocean. On days like today, I'm really glad I couldn't see it...

why would you have an ammonia spike? what kind of tank? I am a marine reef expert if you need any help (ironic I have never seen the ocean eh?)

I'm glad you're safe and were only affected slightly Sharon.

Levi sounds like a toughy alright! Bit like my dog Boots who barks at thunder to get it to be quiet. Tut!

Thanks for all the good wishes...

Wicked Demon, I have five freshwater tanks. The filters weren't working, or oxygenated for 5 hours. Some of my nitrifying bacteria would have died....

Oh Sharon I am glad all of you are ok! I often watch programs about hurricanes on Natgeowild etc. and the destruction is really-really bad.:( We never have hurricanes, cyclones, tornadoes etc. the worst we have are big hailstones and some flooding and then it does not even happen every year.

Craig and I have always wondered why your houses are build with wood and drywall because they just fly away? All our houses here in SA are build with bricks and cement, even the walls inside the houses. Has it got to do with insurance or is it safer because bricks will do more damage when it comes loose?

Linky, we are not actually prone to hurricanes here. They normally have become tropical storms by the time they get here. Igor actually just passed to the southeat of Newfoundland, but it was a monster storm, so did a lot of damage. I'm 55 years old, and have never experienced anything like this. Normally, we don't have to worry about storm damage here...no tornadoes, hurricanes, cyclones etc...We get winter storms...blizzards....but that's about it.

Thanks for all the good wishes...

Unless you have really dirty tanks that wont be an issue, just make sure your carbon is fresh and you will be fine.;)

I'm glad all is okay your way Sharon, living in Florida for the last 34 years I can relate to just what you went through, not a fun experience, I also have a number of fresh water aquariums and last time we had an outage, about 8 or 9 hours, I lost a number of my cichlids, many of which I had for a number of years :31:

Thanks Bobby!

WD...I don't use carbon. Many people with freshwater tanks don't, these days. My tanks are clean with Nitrates seldom over 20ppm. However, that won't prevent the dying of Nitrifing bacteria, if the filters had been without power for much longer. As it is, there would have been some die off, but only enough to cause a blip....

well i'm glad everything seems alright now. It's great you got through the storm.
