Hurricane Evucation Question

Sorry that I haven't had a chance to respond. We decided to rent a car since we couldn't fit all of the traveler cages in my mini cooper. We don't, however, have an adequate cage for more than the trip. We will be staying momentarily near Cincinnati then heading up to Fort Wayne IN if we can't return home for awhile. I'm going to try to see if there is a rescue anywhere that has a few spare cages to house them in temporarily. We plan to leave Thursday or Friday and will be watching carefully. We still don't know what Irma is going to do, but we want to beat the crowd if there is a mass exodus. At this point, we just want to find at least temporary cages or ideas on where to reasonably keep them before they chew through the plastic ones.

Good luck, hope all of your excellent planning is just an exercise! Please stay in touch and update as you are able.

Wondering how our Florida members are faring? Some areas already have mandatory evacuations and there is a run on basic provisions in stores.

Irma has the potential to be a generational storm, but we have a few days remaining to carefully watch and learn of her likely track.

We use a 36 inch collapsable dog crate, with perches and toys inside, for a travel cage for our macaw. She does just fine in there for 7-10 days before she starts going stir crazy. Of course we have her out most of the time when we're traveling, but she's quite happy in there overnight and if we have to leave her in her cage for an hour or two. We can take the perches out and collapse it for relatively easy storage. The company makes the cage in a number of different sizes, and they're relatively inexpensive, plus they stand up to a macaw's beak, so they should be good for any bird. We bought ours off amazon, but I've seen that brand in PetCo and PetSmart as well, so once you get to where you're going, you could buy one if you needed to.

This is the 30 inch version of the crate we use: https://www.amazon.com/MidWest-Fold...d=1504803217&sr=8-12&keywords=travel+cage+dog

I'm fretting endlessly about my parents. I don't have any contact with them, and haven't for years, but that doesn't mean I wish them any harm. I also have teenage siblings, and they're innocent in the estrangement between me and my parents, so I worry about them. My parents still live in the house where I grew up, which was gutted in 1992 by Andrew. It's in zone D on Miami-Dade's evacuation map, but right on the edge with zone C. It's almost certain that south Miami Dade is gonna get really bad weather, if not the eye of the storm itself. The county ordered mandatory evacuations of zones A and B. All I can do is watch and wait.

It doesn't seem to be weakening or disorganizing at all, it's blowing through everything and maintaining a category 5 headed straight up Florida. I haven't left yet because I don't know where it's going and the highways are bumper to bumper with people trying to get out.

Do you have or is it practical to initiate contact with your teenage siblings? Might help set your mind at ease to at least have some information.

Still have some time to wait until a highly accurate track is forecast. I assume at some the freeway system will become unidirectional to make escape easier.

Yes wondering the same, not heard form Tropical for a bit, here's hoping everyone and their flock/family are safe and dry?

Also wondering the same about our florida fellows.

Just heard the storm has been lowered to category 4 but only just. hope all our floridians have plans prepared and are at least thinking of leaving, better to get out early than get stuck in the mass evac

My husband just got back from the Ft. Lauderdale area yesterday. He said it was like "a horror movie". All the highways were jammed, no gas at a lot of stations. I think a lot of people were trying to leave as early as possible. I hope everyone is and will be okay. The airport situation was another mess. :(

I can only imagine. :( Heard authorities are trying to tanker as much fuel as possible to gas stations. Airlines are going to wind down flights to FLL, MIA, and other SoFlo airports by Friday night. They don't want their precious assets destroyed by high winds and flying debris.

Sometimes, its just better to set the past aside for a couple of minutes and just call and say: Just wanted you all to know that regardless of our pass, I am concern, be safe! Bye for Now.

Regardless of what they may or may say, you have the peace of mind that you made contact.

Best Wishes!

It's not possible to contact the teen siblings. I've tried to reach out to my adult siblings who, last I knew, were still in contact with my parents on any level. I've gotten no response.

Unfortunately, it's neither safe nor wise for me to re-establish contact with my parents. The history here is extreme, and not one that I talk about very frequently at all, particularly not online, so I can't give details, but rest assured, if there was any way for me to contact them without putting my safety and the safety of those I love at risk, I would have.

Totally understand! I debated whether to ask the question, but felt comfortable you'd establish whatever boundary was necessary.

We left around 1pm yesterday and it took around 16 hours to get from the Tampa area to the boarder of Tennessee. It was bumper to bumper with brief openings, even on surface roads. Those brief openings closed within hours after we made it through. I drove for 20-22 hours straight through and arrived in the Cincinnati area at 9 am this morning. We got out right before panic started to set in, and it was already a horror show. We got incredibly lucky! Some of my neighbors waited and are watching Walmart turn into violent battleground. I'm incredibly worried for their safety, and they're sounding less than confident about their decision now.

On a better note, friends and family in the area have provided a bird cage and two large barred dog crates for the macaws and it seems to be a good setup for the time being. We are staying with my fiancees family for the time being. Now we're just waiting to see if we have anything to come back to, including my car that I left in what is now an evacuation zone.

Stay safe people.

Great job making an early getaway! Looks like you have a terrific setup, and hopefully will be making your way back to an intact home soon.

Thinking of all the Floridians coping with Irma as of Sunday morning. Seems the track has shifted westward. Be safe!

Looks like it Irma is going to dwarf Andrew, wishing everyone and their fids to be safe.

I'm in east central Florida so we decided to stay, we're only expected to get tropical storm force winds and hurricane gusts. Peanut knows something is coming though, I took her out on the front porch for a while and she didn't want to be out there. She's been in her cage most of the day and hasn't made a peep, normally she would be calling me non-stop to let her out.
