Also, within the article there's a GREAT link saying "five ways to help birds" which further informs what you can do to help and there's another video

How horrible ....So glad they were removed from that situation. Poor babies : (

Oh my gosh! How could someone keep those prescious animals like that?! That is so horrible, oh how I wish I could get my hands on the owner of that store!
I'm glad they are out of there, and I hope whoever is responsible for this gets put away with no chance of parol!

It is pretty disgusting when you can't even trust a sanctuary. They do need governing it seems. That is a heartbreaking story.

:( The CAG in that picture looks just like my Gracie. Nakie chicken!

That poor african grey in the photo looks so bad. Sometimes I am just ashamed of these humans who do such a thing. Just shows you please know the person you are giving or selling your bird to. What you see is not always what you see if you know what I mean.

Yes this was talked about a lot in several forums, your only hearing the UHUS side of the story. Lots of controversy about what was what. Some said it was all a ploy for donations and members tried to visit the place, lot of mud slinging and conflicting reports.

Thanks for the heads up. I joined this forum back in January and didn't remember seeing anyone talk about this. I can see that there could be conflicting reports about this. Do you know what happened to the birds and such after the whole thing?

This is the rescue I was supposed to visit two days before it got shut down. TBH, I don't know who to believe. I was in contact with the owners of the rescue and they were all extremely nice and knowledgeable. I honestly think the Humane Society just didn't know about how hard it is to care for birds. That their water has to be changed multiple times a day. I think they saw a couple things floating in the water and automatically assumed that they hadn't changed the water in days, when in reality they probably had JUST changed it. I don't know. But the Humane Society is keeping all the birds in dog crates right now... And I know at least four of them have died since being "rescued" by the Humane Society...

I heard the HSUS visted several times and didn't take any birds before they did take some of the birds. The AG investigated, police, health dept, etc. All said everything was OK. Don't know if anybody involved can be believed. I think the whole stink was caused by ARFs who volunteered there. Of course the HSUS can't pass up a chance at headlines and donations. I'm not faulting the HSUS ,that's just the way things work nowdays.

I can straighten this out right now. I live in Dayton and if you read my earlier posts about my rescue of our lilac crown amazon you will see that this place was a disgrace! (that is putting it midly) I will give you a bit of a background. One day after church I decided to stop by this "supposed" sanctuary with my husband and children. ( I was interested in getting a bird and thought I would start out looking to rescue one) When I walked in the door I was almost knocked over with the odor of this place. I don't understand actually except that it was filthy. Birds really don't produce that much "urine" odor however the stench in this place stayed in my nose for hours after leaving. This "so called" sanctuary was FILTHY. I have never in my life seen anything like it. The owners actually lived in the center of this filth in a make shift room. I am sure at one time they may have had good intentions. In fact they had a store and bred birds many years ago in my town. It was a nice enough place back then. (It was a different location then) Now all I can say is that they became hoarders. The birds were never let outside of the cages (except for a couple of them) Every bird you asked about was said that it was not up for adoption. I want to stress again how absolutley filthy this place was. The owner would walk around in bare feet on floors that were just covered with bird feces, food, dirt etc. The birds were in horrible shape. I left there so depressed, my husband left in shock because he knew I was interested in getting a bird and I think he was scared of what this would mean after seeing this place. My daughters were practically in tears and we all felt so sad. I told my family I would never step foot in this place again however fast forward to a Sunday where my breeders store was not open on this day and I felt like I wanted to be around some birds. I went back with my 14 year old daughter, we walked in and we were handed a lilac crown amazon. She was 15 at the time and in HORRIBLE shape. She was in a filthy, tiny cage. She was clipped so short that now a year later her feathers are finally to the point where a normal clip might be. I was so grossed out by this place that I sat outside with her. I felt so sorry for her, she had a large lump on her neck, she was in very bad shape. This woman that owns this so called rescue does not vet any of her birds. In court she stated that her vet bill last year on all of these birds was $100. Really? I spend more than that vetting one bird. I ended up taking this lca home, I brought her to the vet and found out that I was looking at another $1000 in vet bills to get her healthy. I had given $100 non refundable deposit to bring her home for 3 days to see if I wanted to keep her. The owner of this place wanted $450 for her. The vet was appaled, not vetting, bad shape and she wanted $450. He actually made a phone call and told her she needed to release the bird to me. Any way, I just want to let all of you know that might feel that this lady was wronged, she was not. I also heard of someone that made a deposit in a bank for her and saw a big 6 figure number in her acct. There is lots going on in the courts right now, because it was supposed to be a non-profit. I can tell you one thing, wherever these birds are now, they are in a better place. This was an embarrasing disgrace. I was able to save one bird I wish I could have saved more. There is also talk about the fact that she caught wind about the humane society coming in and started moving many, many of the birds out. She had way more birds than 100 when I was in there. Trust me, this was a horrible place.

Wow. Thanks very much for that response. Like I said, I had never been there, I was supposed to visit two days before they got shut down. This gives me a bit more insight into the story.

I'm really glad to hear a 1st hand account on this, I've visited their facebook page & its covered in comments on what a first rate sanctuary it was. I did notice that any probing question addressed to the owner was not answered & any negative comments were deleted. Maybe Ohio is stepping up to the plate & enforcing laws to discourage hoarders, hurray for them.

Thanks brianlinkles, so glad to hear from someone who was there.

Thank you so much for filling me in! There are other articles in this same magazine (AllAnimals) about the HSUS saving animals. I myself love tigers more than any other animal and I have tiger decorations in every room of my apt :p And they had a story of a roadside zoo in Oklahoma that bred tigers to just get tons of cubs for the public to play with (for real!) Within a year 23 cubs had died :( .....so infuriating! And tigers are heavily endangered!

Mm, I heard a similar thing. Human Society's reasoning was that they didn't want "non members" acting on "their behalf" due to insurance issues and that they may be falsely representing the organisation.

It's rather confusing to figure out what is truth though. :\ I'm a believer of 'many hands make light work', but at the same time I can understand the issues about third parties working with or on behalf of an organisation without being apart of it. A little but frustrating at times, but also understandable considering what people are willing to go to court for these days.

I think I might be dense but I don't understand what you posted. I can tell you that one of the reasons that the United States Humane Society was brought in was because the enormity of the situation was just too much for our county humane society to deal with. I want to reiterate the fact that there were many more birds than 100 when this started. There were many people involved in the rescue. There was a local pizza store that provided pizza for the volunteers, there was a local warehouse that allowed the birds to be moved there, there were cages donated etc. With all of these people involved it is believed that it leaked out and the ownere caught wind and started moving many of the birds. If you look into the court transcripts most of the birds were sick, many with zoological diseases. I have heard two stories in the past of the owner selling birds that were there for boarding, can you imagine??? I cannot imagine ever walking into that Hell hole and thinking that I would leave my bird. I literally showered everytime I left that place and at first I didn't even have any birds that I was afraid to make sick. The place was appaling, the woman was a hoarder and clearly unable to make logical decisions on the welfare of any of the birds in her care. It's sad, it's upsetting and quite frankly I am ashamed that anyone involved with the care of birds would be so irresponsible.

thank you brianlinkles for the inside story, whatever went on there, im glad they are in a safe place. However, i feel so bad for the bords she shipped out before the humane society came, i hope they're OK :(
