Howdy everyone! i am new to the forum and just need some help with what kind of bird to get and please excuse my writing and punctuation due to the fact english is my 2nd language the writing is very hard for me

A little history bout my me and my first bird

i have owned a double yellow headed amazon named sam and was my best lil buddy we got him from a petshop and they rescued him cause the owners couldnt handle him cause he was kinda of agressive i guess but with me he never really agressive he just didnt like to do certain things so i never made him do that lol but he bonded with me alot he was about 5 when we got him and i was about 8 years old i am now 24

now the sad part... when my mom and step dad got a divorce when i was 19/20 my step dad won the bird in the divorce even when it was clear that sam only liked me and no one else so i lost my baby boy in a stupid divorce
he is alive and well still but it breaks my heart not having him....

so now im having i guess you would call it bird withdrawls lol
i really want a parrot cause idk why just love them

but now since I get to pick one idk which to get lol
ive read alot about different parrots and these are what i came up with
but would like some info from peope actually having these birds

heres my list

i have always loved macaws but at the moment they are just to big for me and a lil to loud so untel i get a nice house with a nice yard/land i will not get a regular macaw but i thought about this mini macaw

mini macaw-Illiger's Macaws

well my first thought when i started thinking about another bird was just to get another amazon but when i actually started to read about them i learned of there how would i put it i guess when they go threw puberty they turn sometimes agressive for a couple of years so when i read about this i wonder if thats what was wrong with my bird at first when we bought him and the other owners got rid of him so thats why i started looking at different breeds but now after reading about this im kinda of nervous about getting another amazon...... but i loved my bird so much they are still part of my choice

amazon- Double Yellow Head
Amazon-Lillac Crown
Amazon-Orange Wing

Since i was little i have always loved Cockatoos like you wouldnt believe lol
and i havent really heard horrible things about them so here are my choices

Cockatoo-CITRON CRESTED
Cockatoo-Sulfur Crested
Cockatoo-Triton
Cockatoo-Umbrella

And these birds i found interesting as well and heard great things about them but never have heard of them

Poicephalus-Jardines
Poicephalus-Meyer's

now thats my list so now this is where i need the help i have only ever owned one kind of parrot and that was a double yellow headed amazon so now i need advice on what i should get now that i have a choice the things i enjoy in a bird i love the talking i love it lol now i know some of the birds i listed are not the best or greatest talkers thats fine a lil talking is fine with me lol

so any advice would be great thank you everyone for your time : )

If you want a quiet bird, you can't go past an eclectus. My baby never makes any noise except when she wants to chatter. She's never screamed or screeched or made any noise that you might consider unpleasant. Except when there are loads of people over and there is a lot of excitement in the room and she wants to join in. She is also extremely calm and confident and never gets scared of anything. I don't know if that is because she's an eclectus or it's just her.

My boyfriend's sister has a galah, and he is loads of fun. He is also very quiet but he is extremely cuddly and always wants a scratch on the head. He is also more playful than my eclectus.

Another bird I have experience with is rainbow lorikeets. They are awesome fun to own, extremely playful and clowny and mischievous and generally just bursting with personality. They have as much personality as twenty puppies combined. They need loads and loads of playtime though. Perhaps more than other species.

I haven't ever met anyone who owns a cocky who is a tame friendly bird. They are always relegated to outdoor aviaries and scream all the time and bite your fingers off given half a chance. It is probably because they didn't realise how much time cockies need and when their behaviour became bad from lack of attention they were dumped outdoors never to be played with again :'-(

Anyway if you don't live in Australia I imagine it might be hard to get a galah, lorikeet or cocky.

Hello there, Nwa! Nice to meet you.

Terribly sorry about your divorce incident. I'm sure you miss little Sam so much. :(

All of those birds are great choices. However, it definitely depends on what specific quality you want most. Do you want a quieter bird? If so, I would suggest that out of your choices; the Jardine's and the meyers are what you'd want. If it's talking and playfulness you're going for, go for the Illiger's macaw, any of the amazons, or any one of the cockatoos. Keep in mind, one of the rather unfortunate traits of the cockatoos are their noisiness. Some species; such as a galah, corella, or ducorp's, are generally quieter. Keep in mind; you've chosen the larger and noiser of the cockatoos.

It is true; amazons do go through aggressive hormonal stages throughout their lives. Unfortunately, this can lead to misunderstandings and surrendered/rehomed birds. If you get another amazon, just understand that thes phases are only temporary.

Hello Nwa :) welcome to the forum! I don't have any experience with larger birds so I'm not much help lol Good luck with your decision though!! :)

Hello and happy you joined us. Which parrot to get is such a personal decision. The decision is usually made when you meet the bird and have "love at first flight" so to speak. It will also depend on which species is available to you. We have lots of rescue foundtions in the USA and I hope you have them there. You can get a wonderful, needy bird and cage sometimes that way.

Welcome to the forum! It's great that you're doing research on this.

Of the birds you've listed, the only one I've had any experience with is an Umbrella Cockatoo. Honestly, if you think a macaw other than a mini would be too big, an Umbrella Cockatoo would probably be too big, also. My in-law's U2 is very smart and sweet but, I have to say, a little crazy - I have no idea how his mind works and he lived with us for 2 months. He's incredibly loving and cuddly but when fired up, his bite can do some serious damage. He can also be very loud, although only when he's upset, which can be managed. I've been told that cockatoos, as a whole, need a lot of attention. Popcorn certainly does.

All in all, they are great birds, but easily take as much or more work than a macaw - in my experience.

I'm a fan of mini macaws. Our breeder had a darling Severe macaw that had loads of personality but in a tiny little package. Good luck with your research.

If you really want an Amazon, because of previous experience with Sam, try to remember that not all Amazons become maniacs during the hormonal phase. I too, was scared by all the stories I read, and hesitated a long time before getting Freddie. I've had him only three months...but he is exactly what I wanted in a bird. I knew what I wanted three birds ago, but I was afraid that I couldn't handle it. I'm so glad that I took the plunge!
