I have an Amazon that has long talons. I have bought the perches that will help with this. He does not want to stand on them. He will go near them if I hold out a treat. I am wondering if there is something I could put on them that is edible to encourage him to "check it out" I noticed at first he gave them a wide walk around. He will go over and touch with his mouth, but nothing more.
Thanks

If these are concrete or sanded perches remove immediately. I have made the same mistake in the past. lesions and bumble foot are the result. I use a lot of mesquite as I have a lot . However I make sure it's dry( even taking to a neighbor who has a kiln) and then remove the bark.

I've never had any results from perches to keep nails trimmed. I have a couple that are non uniform diameter, smooth on top for their feet, and rough where the nails contact. I think it's good in theory, but doesn't actually do a lot. A quick trim when we go for vet check ups works better for my flock.

thanks. I will just have to wait until spring thaw and then take him over an hour away to a vet. The new perches helped him with his beak and I will leave them around and see if he takes to them. He was in his cage without toys for at least 4 years. He got lots of verbal interaction and decent food. He does have a special desire for peanuts, but I limit them. My mom did not give me great advice on how to take care of him

New things just showing up is never a good thing with Amazons. It is much better for them to show-up in the same room and slowly work their way to the cage and then having your Amazon be part of the site section and installation. My Amazon will start checking new stuff on the floor near is cage. It can take-up to a year for somethings to work their way to acceptance.

I was thinking so. Will just keep them around. Will encourage him when he is getting a peanut by being near them. Hey, can birds have unsalted peanut butter? I know regular human peanut butter is no good...but just thinking

It is common that processed peanut butter will concentrate the peanut oil and the nut meal making it even more problematic. I would avoid providing it. It is much better to provide the nut while still in the shell as the overall work to break the shell open and then chew each nut requires more energy and therefore a bit healthier.
