yes copperarabian before I purchased it I asked if she was healthy and they said yes and many times before that I visited the birds and the one I bought was healthy in my eyes and here almost a year later she is still healthy. I found a breeder in dubuque iowa who breeds green cheeks for$200. I am going to pay for it to get dna sexed so that will be about 30 more. My parents will prob pay for cage and stuff, and I made a deal that even with all the stuff they buy it wont be as much as the gcc. If I knew how to post links on here Id show the cage I want to get to see if it is too big or small from the opinions of u guys.

at everyone please check out my other thread names for green cheeks!

This is the cage Peeko has - I highly recommend it. [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Prevue-Products-Wrought-F040-31-Inch/dp/B00176F5L0/"]Amazon.com: Prevue Pet Products Wrought Iron Flight Cage with Stand F040 Black Bird Cage, 31-Inch by 20-1/2-Inch by 53-Inch: Pet Supplies[/ame]
Honestly, it isn't likely that the cage and all of the supplies will cost less than the conure itself, if you get him/her everything he/she needs. Peeko was $275, and his cage + supplies have cost easily over $300 so far. That isn't including having to replace toys often as they get destroyed, etc

well it does I am gonna buy a big cage at petsmart and some perches and food and make the toys myself i make good foraging toys I made one for Cotton and she absolutley loves it!!!!!!! I would show you but i dont know how to post links yet..... Since you brought that up, as long as my parents pay for the cage i will buy some 2 toys [ i will make ALOT more] 2 perches or more, and the food, and cuttlebone. the cage is over 200 and i will be paying probably about 250-270 prob. They only have to pay like 230 or something. Does that sound fair?

I haven't read the entire thread... GUILTY! But.. regardless, I am keeping my advice up here for an other youngters or adults that are thinking about getting a bird.

I am not sure how old you are, but is there a location in which you could volunteer to help birds or other animals? Are children permitted to do such a thing?

You get my line of thinking? You would get a chance to work with animals or birds in real life and have the experience needed, and they would have to spend the time driving you back and forth instead of having a green cheek already at home to take care of. Yes, you have another bird, but working with other parrots if you can can't hurt! Just be careful to wash hands, etc. so nothing would be spread from the birds you help to your pet.

After a little while I would think they would give in, or you would see how much goes into caring for these intellingent creatures and possibly change your mind.

Either way, you would get to know some parrots and get experience caring for them without the commitment of having your own. I know I would love to have one of my own, but having cared for my parent's parrot I know that my husband and I aren't home enough to give the attention a bird needs. We visit and parrot sit as much as we can instead.

Even if there is no place to volunteer it couldn't hurt, while you are waiting on your parents to warm up to your idea, to do research on things that you could do to help your feathered friends. Education, raising money, join a club for parrot lovers, etc.

I'm not sure how much things cost in the US but a full initial vet exam would be $200-250 (consultation and bloodwork) then $90 for yearly checkups, for food I buy fresh veggies every week which only costs about $10, pellets are $25 for about a month and a half and seeds $20 for 3+ months. Then they have random soft food, nuts, biscuits and treat food.
I initially spent $80 on toys and perches just to start but have since spent another $150, would've been more if I didn't have chunky toys to steal from my GCC.

I'm not sure what cost you were referring to, so hopefully I covered it.

@ SweetPeasFriend I have a parakeet and have been doing research for like a year. I know a LOT and I think they know it!

all this about vet visits wow I don't take mine to the vet unless I suspect something is wrong and all my birds are extremely healthy! I do take new ones in for a vet check to make sure all is ok but after that first vet check when I bring them home I dont go again unless I suspect something of being wrong.

Does anyone know how much petsmart Central illinois cost? If my parents say I can, I want to get my GCC a vet checkup there and start taking my birds on yearly visits probably.

congratulations! i would spend the extra month you have saving up, and reading as much as you can about training. almost every gcc i have heard of has gone through a bad nippy phase. with consistent training and tough skin, they smooth out to be wonderful companions. i thought i was ready for a parrot (i'm 16), and i researched for almost 3 years. my nanday conure blackjack is sooo much more than i expected. he is loud, feisty, messy, and non stop. i have to organize my whole life around him. he has to be out every single day for a bare minimum of 1 hour. i spend allot of time caring for him and constantly guiding his behavior. the amount of work it takes has literally brought me to tears and puts allot of stress on me. however, after all this work, he is the most adorable, well behaved, mushy, sweet, affectionate bundle of fluff! i guess what i'm saying is it is not easy by any means, and getting bit kinda hurts (lol), but the affection they give in return for our hard work is like no other pet can give. input equals output. good luck with your bird and stick around the forum, we would love pictures when you get him/her :)!

Gccgirl. A new bird is exciting. A new bird is fun. But what are your plans? Immediate plans, short-term, long-term? You mentioned finding a bird-friendly college.

You didnt post your age so I will assume high school for now. You are about to make huge changes in your life potentially. Is a new bird at this time the best plan? Will the gcc get along with Cotton? Be fair and honest with yourself, because your new baby will depend upon you for everything and if you cant be there for him it might adversely affect your relationship.

When I was younger I was in love with the idea of being in love. But once I was married I fully understood what love meant. Commitment, responsibility, through the good times and bad. Do your homework, consider everything from food, to cleaning, to financial and training.

Well, I wrote a page long of good things about having a parrot, and then show it to my parents. And of cause, I showed them lots of videos and photos. I also took them to lots of pet shops with (tame) parrots, and played with them. And how I promised that I will work hard at good, etc. :D

Good luck! :)

But before you decide to get a parrot, make sure have the time, money, space, etc, for them. Owning a parrot is hard work! Biting, screaming, molting, mess, and a lot more! And make sure you get the right parrot that suits you!

If anyone has any links to websites with big cages for a green cheek give them to me

You have to be careful with wire spacing on any cages you look at - I recommend 1/2" wire spacing. Peeko could slip right through 3/4" wire spacing, and anything larger.
