Morning everyone,

I was browsing the net for GCC facts and on Wikipedia it mentioned that Green Cheek Conures have a life span of up to 30 years (which I knew) but I was a bit alarmed when they said that in captivity their average lifespan is about 10 years often due to owner neglect. :(

Anyway, that piqued my curiosity.

So how old is your GCC?

I have Franklin, he's owned us since he was 3 months old. He is now a happy healthy 2 1/2. :rainbow1:
The pic is him having an afternoon snooze in July...this year.

Well my little baby Kylar is only about 2.5 months old. My previous GCC I had was about 1.5 years when I was forced due to circumstance to give him away. He is still happy and healthy with his new family 6 years later.

Providing you care for your conure well he will certainly live 25-30 years in captivity so long as he doesn't catch something etc etc. In fact I do believe they live longer in captivity than in the wild but yes neglect can severely hamper that. Bastards that get a bird without caring for it... why do they do it.. grr.

I don't own a green cheek conure, but I've determined that there is the average lifespan, the expected lifespan and the potential lifespan.

Average lifespan for a green cheek conure might be 10-12 years in age. Maybe up to 15 or 18?

Expected lifespan could be 25-30 years.

Potential lifespan? That could be over 30 years... maybe 35 or so years.... but I don't know what the oldest recorded green cheek conure is... but the oldest bird to have survived I would put at the potential lifespan.

I know with cockatiels, their potential lifespan is 35/36 years old, expected lifespan is around 20-30 years and average probably falls within 12-18 years in age.

Health, diet, exercise, environment and accidents all play a role in a birds lifespan. Try not to worry about average lifespan and just enjoy your conure and hope you have many years with him! :)

OH I completely enjoy my birds without worry about their age.

I just thought it would be neat to see how many of us may have older GCC's...conures in general have seemed to have exploded in popularity within the last couple years.

I know most of us on this forum have younger GCC's, but I was curious to know if any of us have "older" ones.

I wonder also, about personality change as they age. My guy is EXTREMELY active as a rule, I wonder if he'll become more cuddlier in his "Middle age" :D

Well she was found as a stray so no idea but it will be a year that iv had her on Oct. 8th :)

Oliver is coming up on 6 years in October actually. He was around 9 mos-1 year when I got him (supposedly) the day before halloween almost 5 years ago. Mia's previous owners guessed that she's about 2 but we don't really know. I'm her 3rd owner.
