How often do you take your fid(s) to the Avain Vet?

Well birdie exams. Every other year and when necessary...

Your vet needs a baseline in order to diagnose issues quickly.

The numbers on my birds, due to age and diet, have always been perfect, therefore, it is only necessary every other year.

I don't have any birds with health issues, or it might be needed more frequently.

I have 3 birds, I take 1 of them to the vet each month so I take them to the vet every 3 months. I don't do blood tests, just a $75 check-up unless they show symptoms.

WOW!! If you don't mind me asking, why do you take them every 3 months? Do you ever do blood tests at all?

I do well birdy exams every other year, too, like Birdman. This year Hunter and Sam will be prodded, probed, fecal, blood tests...the whole workup. Last year I did both Ripley and Niko. And of course whenever necessary.

Just to make sure they're healthy lol...I rarely do blood tests, I only do this when I feel they're showing symptoms of illness.

I was curious if anyone's vet ever found something during a yearly exam that was curable by being caught and treated before symptoms started to show. For example, do birds get high cholesterol or blood pressure and go on meds? Do birds undergo chemo therapy for cancer? If a yearly exam can't catch something like that or there's no appropriate treatment, I'm not sure what the point would be--there's so much information about good care on the internet, after all.

I would overall like to do yearly, and then when necessary- based on Chili being a galah and prone to so many things, my goal is stay on top of her health...if we get to the point of her being extremely healthy, I could do every-other year.

most of my pets have been yearly or when having issues.
Even a simple beak trim prompts a health exam.
as for my breeders, rarely, due to the high turn over of changing pairs.

As for simple issues, I treat here and save $$$$.

My conure is 9 months old yesterday. Got her at 4 months. I have not yet taken my conure to the vet for checkup. What sort of tests are being done for a typical conure at a regular checkup anyway? Someone with conure please enlight me.

That was what my vet recommends when the baseline numbers are all good, and they are still relatively young. (My oldest is only 40...) And the lab tests I've done in the past show I've got their diet dialed in, and the numbers are perfect. As long as nothing changes, do I really need to keep confirming it?!

The important thing is for the vet to have a fairly recent baseline, so that they can compare the labs immediately when there is a sudden event, because birds mask illness so well. By the time you figure it out, the disease process is set in. So it helps them diagnose quickly.

With no base line, they are just guessing. Could be this. Could be that. Could be that by the time we figure it out, it's too late!

So that's why it's important.

Fargo goes in for a check up once or twice a year, just to look at his weight, feel his bones and muscles, check feathers, look down his throat, talk about his behaviours and diet, and basically Dr Bob just loves Fargo, so the exam ends up being an hour of Bob beaming looking at Fargo hahaha

I only have the one bird, plus close relationship with the vet, so not a problem going once or twice a year, just to confirm he is a happy healthy bird!


Plus Bob will reply to any emails straight away if i have any concerns, and will always look after Fargo in an emergency!!

Fargo got a check up 2 weeks after i got him, and then mid last year... and Bob said he was like a different bird, so much healthier, so much happier, and his feathers were absolutely incredible (they were a mess when we got him)..

He said there isn't a single thing wrong with him, incredible healthy...

But an exam every now and then is peace of mind to make sure he stays healthy

I take my birds to a vet twice a year.
Just the standard check-up.
I haven't done any blood test ,they scare me.
I read on a forum in my country that one died of one,thanks to the not caring vet.
The story is firmly branded in my mind.

My budgies have never been vetted, had these 2 for 8 yrs and they're very healthy. My conure has been vetted twice this year...wellness check, and then a comprehensive blood and gram stain test,and DNA. He'll be going annually just to make sure he's up to snuff.
