Hi,i am wondering how much money you set aside every month for your birds.
For unexpected vet bills, maybe a new cage in a few years time,or a toy splurge.
Right now i put aside about 50-100 euros a moth.
But i live at home right now, when i won't it will be a lot less.

I'm not out of high school yet, so my parents have set up an emergency fund for all of our pets. They will be putting aside $75 a month for them in college and after that I'll be putting aside that much, maybe more. (Not to mention that emergency fund!)

Sounds like a reasonable goal:) We saved $100 a month until we reached $1000. Now we just add a little here and there where we can. We have enough to cover *most* vet costs if Kiwi were to become ill or injured, or at least a good chunk of a hefty vet bill.

Wanted to add- I would shoot for around $1500-$2000 PER PET as your "end goal" in the emergency fund. You want enough to cover vet expenses, but a vet fund should not consume all your money.

i am trying to save as much as i can for the vet fund right now,in about a year or some more i will be living on my own and can't set aside that much anymore.
Well that and i want new cages then.

We have a goal of 3-6 months of expenses in the bank at all times. None of that is "just for birds" but if a large vet bill were to come our way we would be able to handle it. We budget $200 each month for food and parasite prevention, toys, etc for all our pets including the dog BUT a large part of why it can be so little with so many pets is because a lot of their food comes out of our food budget. We eat a lot of produce and whole grains, and most days they get what we get, just diced up smaller.

Just wondering, does nobody else use insurance for medical emergencies? I pay £18 a month to a company that specialises in exotic pets, and it covers me up to £4000 in vet expenses so I don't feel the need to set anything aside unless there's something specific she needed. Granted, if she lives 40 years without getting ill it doesn't bear thinking about how much money I'll have paid out, but I prefer not having to worry about it.
