How loud is your Grey?

I've heard that Greys are one of the quietest medium-large sized birds.
I know each bird is an individual and training also plays a role, but I am interesting in hearing about your bird?

When is he/she loudest, How loud is it (relative to other birds such as macaws and toos and also relative to quieter species such as tiels)?

my CAG is very quiet compared to our amazon, or the macaws and cockatoos I grew up around at my grandparents. She makes one horrid high pitch squeek that I don't think even the neighbors can hear it but its so high pitch ughhhh!!! And she just talks a lot and whistles. She mainly does her high pitch squeek when I enter or leave the room, or when I bend down next to her cage....ear level with her.

Right now the sun is starting to go down a bit and the Amazon starts up with her "call" "AHH AHHH AHHH AHHH AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! Coo coo cooo" Like clock work at 7pm. Now you can hear her from a few streets down....embarassing T_T

thanks for sharing.

LOL we had a goffin cockatoo and some other species when I was growing up. I remember hearing them from the bus stop that was across the neighborhood. Granted, we had an outdoor aviary.

You are getting a hahns macaw right? My grandma had one named "Baby Sam" He wasn't nearly as loud as her blue and golds and yellow nape amazon. I wish I knew where my grandfather gave all her birds to, they lived in hawaii for 20 years and moved back here to california for help with their health/age from the family. My grandfather gave away her 5 b/g's , the CAG, hahns and yellow nape. I didn't bring it up because I didn't want to upset my grandma but she was suffering from dementia. It was like a don't ask situation, and not like my parents would let me have 6 macaws..... It's just sad and that side of my family is so secretive. My grandfather passed in October so now really no one knows where the birds went.

I am getting a hahns. Noise isn't an issue for me right now; I was just curious for future planning. Sorry to hear about all the birds. I can't imagine losing that many pets at once, especially large birds. My grandmother has dementia as well and currently lives with us.

My CAG can be loud at times, but nothing that would bother the neighbors, or even people at the other end of the house. When he is very scared he'll let out a very loud growling screaming noise, and he often makes high pitch whistles/peeps.

Kenji lived with a B&G for 20 years, so he also does lots of macaw noises, but they aren't even close to the real scream of a macaw lol

I have several parrots, and I have a very atypical 10-year-old Congo African Grey. He is the loudest bird in my flock. I read all the time what great apartment birds Greys make, but this one would definitely get you kicked out if he lived in one (he doesn't). He's actually a happy loud, playing, vocalizing, chirping like the smoke and car alarms, just a racket maker! LOL He's not neurotic. He's never plucked at all. He gets out a lot and has access to an outdoor aviary, where he spends nice days. He's healthy and receives regular vet checkups. He's just a VERY loud, very loved Grey. They DO come in that variety. :)

I have only ever owned Greys
Mishka is sure the quietest one by far
He talks non stop, and thankfully never screams

my hahn's is the loudest of the flock, he yells if I leave the room or my toddler gets loud, my CAG doesn't scream, he does a lot of whistles, youhoo, meows and talks when he feels like it, so he isn't really loud at all

A few times a day or when there's a lot of activity going on, my two just shout it up. It's just loud talking, like you shouting across a hallway for the most part, but intermingled with excited shrieks.

It's been over 3yrs n I never once heard my grey scream for no reason.
But she is very talkative, love to whistle n sing too.
Also love to communicate with the birds outside my apartment. Lol!

Thanks for sharing everyone. It seems like most aren't screamers, but of course it varies.

Do they often mimic other birds in your flock?

Mine is also not very loud, maybe sometimes when she would like to have an attention, but she doesn't do that a lot as she knows that I'll ignore the creaming.

My CAG is very quiet. He talks, does all kinds of wierd noise imitations etc but he is not real loud about it atall.

Thanks for sharing guys. I have just been wondering in case I one day move into a town house. Constant chattering/talking wouldn't be a big deal, just can't be too loud.

We live in town house, no problem so far.

I have a CAG and he is mostly quiet compared to my brother's macaw. The only time Coocoo, CAG, is loud is when I'm back from a long day. He starts to whistle and speak trying to grab my attention from everyone else 1st. he sometimes blows my cover if I'm sneaking out lol but other than that he's chill. :grey::cool:

The only time my Grey got annoying loud was when she'd do sharp whistles or make the noise of me banging the drain basket on the sink. I'd just be careful what sounds she hears up close. You don't even know it until it's too late. But generally, the Greys are not screechers or screamers and are relatively quiet. I lived by myself and I had a pretty quiet house so my bird was sort of peaceful. When you go to a pet store you hear the birds screaming and making those ear-splitting noises...... you won't have to worry too much about those things with a Grey.

As you probably know, Greys are like having a five year old child. If you raise a child in a noisy, loud environment where people are yelling at each other and loud music is blaring and the TV volume is on "11" (for you 'Spinal Tap' fans), then you're going to have a child that yells and is loud and obnoxious. Same with a Grey. It's going to pick up the vibe that is present in it's environment. Give it a quiet, loving home and it will be quiet and loving.
