Hi! Iā€™m a soon to be mom of an ekkie (next month) and I want her to be included in as many things as I can

How do you include them in everything? Where can/canā€™t you take them?
Do you use a harness? Maybe a carrier?
Are they more acceptable than dogs in certain places?
I want all advise you can give :)

Hello,

Harnesses are great. Buuut for the next little while the easiest way to keep him/her with you everywhere is to stay home as much as possible.

I used to take Alex with me everywhere when I was a young kid. I bent a few rules, and did some things in ways I shouldn't have, buuut generally a well behaved bird is welcome in many places. Alex used to go with me to a local taco restaraunt we lived near and he would hang out with the cashiers and get spoiled rotten with attention and slivers of lettuce or peppers. One time my dad, Alex, and I were out and about when my dad asked if we wanted to go see a movie....... we took a bird in with us to see catwoman! Hahahaha good memories. :) we tucked Alex into an insulated bag(old style, more like a bag made from a quilt, not a mylar/plastic thing like you can buy in the grocery shops now)so he wouldn't get cold or scared during the movie, and we snuck him a piece of popcorn or 2. Hehehe a lot easier to do with a cockatiel than an ekkie tho. :p

Certainly a harness is the best ( except for public transportation and airlines). But teaching a parrot to accept ( and relish) being in a harness can take a lot of effort and work. Well worth it. It took me a year of every day training with my Salty before he was OK putting it on and taking it off. We still put it on him every night, just to maintain his comfort level. Lots of Youtube videos available to show you the steps to take in training.

Carriers are required for the above transportation and typically most vets prefer a carrier, so there is no issues with other animals in waiting rooms.

Omg that should be so funny hahaha but definitely easier to do with a cockatiel.
Iā€™m home a lot and go straight home after work but If I have to run some errands I wanted to know to what extend she could go with me

Iā€™ll have to practice as soon as possible then haha

FYI #1: Develop the Trust relationship prior to harness training...

FYI #2: Double check your area with a very different eye on the sky and trees! We live in the center of Red Tail Hawk chick training area. There are five Hawk families that visit our area nearly every day each week. In addition, we have two families of America Eagles and this year their kids from last year. We never take our Amazon outside, only with a carrier and then quickly to the SUV.

One of our out and about members should be by soon. I understand that they use a backpack like carrier and they love it. A bit pricey, but they say well worth it. Something like a Pack-O-Bird, but not sure...

Enjoy!

My eclectus barbers his flight and tail feathers in the winter, then molts in August, so is flightless during the summer. I can take a quick walk around the block with him on my hand (always holding the toes, held close, never on the shoulder).

Anything linger than 10 minutes and Iā€™ll take him out in his Pak o Bird. This is mostly for walks or times when he wouldnā€™t ever be coming out.

If we have a specific destination in mind like the vet, or where he will be sitting around for a while (lounging around the pool), heā€™ll go out in his wire carrier. If lounging outside,we will cover the top of his cage to keep him comfortable and protected from anything big and scary that might be flying overhead.

The three I take out and about are super bonded to me, recalled, clipped so that they are semi-flighted (ever since Maggie), and "stay put" trained.

Also, I can hand them to you. You can not just walk up and pick one up. That prevents someone from trying to walk off with one of your birds.

I don't use carriers or harnesses.

I have three I don't take out and about because they don't behave. I have three more that would be with me 24/7 no matter where...

IF I let them.
