how animals are treated in the UAE (by some)

Ostriches?! ...make nice house pets?! Lol. So you don't need a permit or anything special to have them?

Can't say that I agree with that statement at all...

Years ago I did a PI lawsuit on a person who was badly maimed by an Ostrich. There was a junk dealer who got rid of his junkyard guard dogs, and replaced them with Ostriches? Why? The birds were meaner, (a lot meaner!) and no one could outrun them.

The birds chased this guy down, got him on the ground, and literally stomped and clawed him until the tranquilizer darts kicked in... Have you ever seen the claws on an ostrich? It's no Joke! Those birds can and will hurt you! And they can apparently stomp you hard enough to fracture ribs, and rupture spleens.

Not something I'd want as a pet!

Gotta ask, did this person brake into the yard, or was he there on legal grounds:confused:

Gotta say, I've seen much worse here. Hell; I might live in one of those cages there so clean. Keeping animals in small cages is the only way, for them to make money. They wouldn't be able to keep very many animals, and make money if they had to keep there animals big cages like you would at home.

They only way I would see any of that cruel, is if they had solitary animals bunched in together.

Also fun fact; if you look up animal cruelty on Google images. You won't see anything other then a dog or cat, till about half way down the page.

I would say, that's as good as it gets pretty much with animals for sale. Everything looked pretty clean. I've seen bird fairs here in the US that are much dirtier than that...especially pet shops. I didn't care for the turtle situation but that may have been temporary. But not bad overall for a pet-sale environment.

I would think that's pretty reasonable considering there's a zillion more pet cats and dogs than pet birds so there's going to be more stories about that.

I disagree that theres more dogs and cats, in overall population or overall percentage of abuse. I think the same amount, if not more "small animals" and "exotics" die or suffer extreme neglect, but no one cares about it, posts pics of the abuse/dead animals or writes articles/presses charges over it. If someone buys their kid a goldfish or gerbil and the kid never feeds it or cleans it's enclosure and the animal dies, no one hears about it or does anything about it, they don't care because those animals hold little "value" to people. If someone starves and neglects a dog or cat, charges are filed and people are outraged. How many untold numbers of goldfish, rodents, reptiles, birds (small ones especially), invertebrates are bought as pets, then abused, neglected and killed? There's not less of them than dogs and cats, there's probably more. People just seem to hold dogs and cats of a higher "value" than other animals and are more outraged when someone harms them. It's called speciesism, where you view certain animals as superior. I'd also argue there's more livestock at any given time than dogs and cats, and those poor creatures suffer unspeakable abuse. It's just people find it acceptable to abuse those animals in the most vile, sadistic ways and NO ONE CARES about their plight. Speciesists just find dogs and cats superior to other creatures.

Oh I was just joking  even if I had a ranch I still wouldn't want one!

Yikes, sounds pretty dangerous too. I don't trust 300 lb. birds LOL!

Once they get much over 300 GRAMS is when you should stop trusting them:54: Now here's a scary prospect- Imagine a 300lb parrot:52:

I had to laugh at the 'much over 300 grams' remark because I think you had a certain little green someone in mind lol! :D. As for the 300 lb. parrot... When I cuddle with Robin, I sometimes wish that he was big enough to hug tight with both arms wrapped around him... but then that would mean about the size of a large dog .

It's a fact that more people keep cats and dogs as pets than exotics. You can look up the statistics. I don't know anyone aside from this forum that keeps an exotic of any kind.

However, I do agree with the statement that people are less likely to care about abuse to small exotics. Frankly, I don't think they think it's that serious when it comes to cats and dogs either.

Maybe by the people who are talked to, but I really think the gap between dog and cats, and exotics is car smaller then you think. I don't personally know anyone, who was and a dog other then my gfs Mom Nd my landlord.

Most of the people I know and talk to own exotics, ranging from various snakes to birds. Some of these animals are worth more $$ then most dogs. The other exotics market, has really taken off in the last 20 years.

You'd be rely surprised to how many exotics are out there. They don't get the attention that dogs and cats do, because they aren't cute and cuddly. They don't sell, people think they are either creepy or will hurt you.:rolleyes:

I wouldn't be surprised one bit. We've kept reptiles (no snakes) and small mammals and even raised saltwater fish. We used to attend the local exotics and/or reptile shows.

Cats and dogs are more popular partly because of the exact reason you stated about them being more cuddly. It takes a certain type of person to appreciate a snake or a spider because they aren't hands on the the same way as a cat or dog.

I do agree though that they don't get the same attention or appreciation. They certainly aren't for everyone.

No they sure aren't; I don't think my scorpion would like getting a cuddle at all hahaha. Unfortunately for that exact reason, you will never see them get respect the way a fuzzy little doggy or kitty will. I truly just think its ashame that other animals, aren't as prized as the " normal " animals.

Now that being said; I have nothing against dog or cat owners. I one day will own a dog, but my apartment is just way to small for a dog, and and my landlords dogs aren't the greatest with other dogs.
