Ziva - Pineapple Green Cheek Conure
I finally got Ziva a jalapeno pepper to try because I have heard that birds like hot peppers. I hate hot peppers, I don't even like black pepper. I am a little worried about one thing though. Will the oils in the pepper transfer to me if she eats the pepper then I hold her. Either from her foot or her beak. I am afraid to get it into my eyes if I hold her and then rub my eye. When I was younger I was taking the seeds from a jalapeno for my stepfather to plant in the garden. Even though I thought I washed my hands well I rubbed my eye later and the oils must of still been there because my eye started to burn. It hurt so bad I will never forget it. I really haven't handled hot peppers since then. But if she loves them I will do it. I just want to know if my fears are warranted. Today I gave her a piece without once touching the pepper, used a paper towel to hold it and give it to her, then washed my hands. So has anyone had the oil transfer from holding a bird that had eaten the peppers?

The oils will be all over the bird tell the bird cleans itself. Just because that's the nature of oils. Tou should be able to clean your hands with soap after handling the bird if the you're really worried. FYI never eat any of my bean dip. I use habanaros :)

I gave hot peppers to my birds and gotten a kiss from one of them and my lips did burn afterwards! They weren't deadly hot peppers so my lips were fine thank goodness. The oils didn't seem to stay on them very long, but after that, I didn't touch or kiss any of them that day. So yeah be careful!

Great, thanks. I will be careful after she has a pepper.

I give them to Scarlet all the time, and I hate, hate, hate hot chillies!
I have made the mistake many of times giving her a kiss afterwards, not pleasant for someone who hates chillies at all!
But as far as getting it in my eyes, I haven't made that mistake yet and I have hayfever, so I'm always scratching my eyes :( haha

Thanks, I tend to rub my eyes. I actually have a few eyelashes that grow wrong and scratch my eye, they hurt. So I will just have to remember to be more careful when I give her the dumb peppers.

Just make sure you wash your hands properly and you should be fine :) just remember no kisses on the beak! It's horrible! Lol

I accidentally rubbed my nose. Lets just say it was bad, really bad. Don't touch your nose! I had to stick cold tissues up my nose for hours afterwards, haha. Live and learn.
