I have a female gouldian that has a darkened nail. she seems to be holding her foot up, when she is perching. I know it does not look right at all, but don't know why it's turning black. It just started late yesterday. she seems fine in herself, just the toe is uncomfortable. Is she loosing her nail??
anything I can do for her?????? what could be the causes???

I have provided a picture of her toe, this is the only shot I could get

it could be infected? maybe the quick (blood part of the nail) grew, it looks like it could be filled with blood. it also looks very long, but normally when the nails reach that length, they start to curl. i would say to cut it, but because it could bleed, i would take her to the vet. it doesn't seem life threatening, but it should still be checked out. until then, you could put her in a hospital cage. take a shoe box or aquarium tank and place a heating pad (on the lowest setting) inside. cover the heating pad with paper towels and make sure she can't get under the heating pad. put small dishes on the bottom filled with food and water. add a perch of nest of you wish. put the cage in a quiet, safe, place. cover the lid half way with a towel, but allow for air flow. good luck :)!
