Orange Winged Amazon. I think he/she is about 3 years old.
I stumbled across this site today while trying to look up why my bird's beak seemed to be peeling, and found some awesome answers on this site so I decided to join!
I'm American but I live in Brazil with my husband and son, and have been for 3 years now. Anyway we recently inherited a orange winged or blue fronted:green: (I'm pretty sure at least) Amazon Parrot from my husband's father who had been keeping it on his mini farm area inside of a tiny cage outside in the chicken coop. He named it Junior, and we just kept the name. I call it Junie. So my father in law says the bird is around 2 years old, about the same amount of time he had it, and Junior was MEAN when he owned him. We got him, brought him in the house in a bigger cage that is opened at the top, and he socialized in record time. He is still getting better everyday, too!

Welcome to the forum! Brazil! Oh my! You must get to see some amazing wild parrots there, I would love to see pictures! I read up on Brazil a bit when I was researching/naming my first green cheek conure. Rio was my first GCC and was named after Rio De Janeiro, after his sad passing, I got River who was named after Rio (since Rio means river in portugues and spanish) :)

Forget the birds! Tell us about Brazil!! lol just kidding, welcome! I'm pretty new here too C:
Junior is one beautiful bird. I had the pleasure of meeting an Amazon a few weeks ago at the pet store named Rainbow. She would talk & scream & sounded just like a little child !! lol at first I was looking for a lost kid in the store before I realized it was the bird. I was amazed & it was hilarious !

Lovely amazon! Welcome to the forum, hope you find more tips and tricks. :)

Hey thanks! Yes it is amazing to see the very birds I only knew as pets and zoo attractions flying in groups across the sky or playing in a tree! Parrot in Portuguese is Papaguay (sounds like papa-guy). I always see groups of Amazons flying around, and the smaller green parrots here are called paraqueta but they are not the same as what we call parakeets in english. The paraqueta I see everywhere and they're always hanging out in trees, playing. The coolest is when every once in a while I'll see a group of Military Macaws flying overhead. THAT is awesome. There was one in our cashew fruit tree not too long ago but apparently I didn't run to see it fast enough before it flew away.

Brazil is a paradise when it comes to the sites and animals! However the downside is that with all the awesome, beautiful creatures comes the ugly dangerous ones. The village I am currently living in now has a lot of nasty spiders. You ever hear of the Brazilian Wandering Spider? There are sooo many of them and I kill at least a couple a week in my house. They are one of the most venomous spiders in the world, no JOKE! And they're everywhere! We also have an abundance of tarantulas... found 2 in the house so far in the last year. ugh. But, lizards and stray animals replace the rabbits and squirrels that you all are used to. LOTS of stray animals it's sad to say. Also, sadly to say that many of the pet birds were captured from their nest as a baby. A lot of them end up as local pets in someone's home who knows nothing about proper care, and they are fed table scraps, as if they are dogs. This is how Junie was. His vocabulary is very very limited and he is still maturing as far as social skills goes because he was stuck back in a small cage with a bunch of chickens and was given scraps from dinner to eat, which always included meat! My father in law still demands on giving him meat when he comes to visit it makes me furious! Anyway, other not so lucky captured birds, like Junie, are even more unfortunate and are smuggled around the country and shipped everywhere in the world on the black market. It is so sad. They always show on the news whenever a smuggler gets nabbed and they film all the birds that were to be sold away and the conditions are just horrible. They often will fill a cage made for a parakeet with about 10 or MORE! Horrible. Anyway I am rambling. Junie is in good hands and I will do everything I can to make sure he lives a nice, happy, LONG life.

as sad as the smugler and stray animals part is, the part with the parrots is AMAZING. if i saw a wild flock of military macaws i would probably pass out. the other day i saw some wild quaker parrots nesting in some light posts by a little league feild and thought that that was cool, but MACAW, thats awsome lol. maybe you could use your amazon (once hes fully tame and bonded with you guys and back to health) as an example of what other peoples pets could be with proper love and care :)

In some areas of Australia cockatoos are considered pests.

Can you imagine having to shew a flock of cockatoos out of your yard!

lol i could never!

Welcome to ParrotForums.. You've got a very beautiful amazon there ~~
