Does anyone know where to get bark(veggie) tanned leather in the USA or canada. The stuff i normally use costs and arm and a leg (Bark tanned kangaroo hide o_O) Just looking for a cheaper alternative.

i work with leather allot and if i could find a cheaper one then that would be great. right now an extra-thick whole hide costs over 200$- around 250 after shipping customs etc.

(the extra thick hide is: 1.2mm - 1.4mm thickness and approx. 6 to 8 sq ft.)

I would love to start making parrot toys with leather BUT at that price... i would have to charge through the ROOF for it.

personally i prefer to make cheap in price for the buyers since i (am starting back to work soon, and the hubby works) already have a income and know what it is like in these times to try and meet the needs of our fids with that kind of stimulus on a tight budget.

Allot of the toys out there are ridiculous in price.

I know allot of people who would love certain kinds of toys but wont pay 20-40$ for something to be destroyed with a matter of, in some cases, hours.

If toys last long then the price is less important than if not of cauce

When I use to make leather based toys I got my bark tanned from a local guy who unfortunately passed away a couple months ago :/

I always got thick english kip from him and made toys for my aunt's birds as well as for friends. my aunts birds have yet to "completely" destroy the toys I gave them last summer. (one has been modified into a foot toy LOL they chewed through what was holding the "arms" of it together)

kangaroo is normally what i use when i am making other things (Shoes for me and chaps for horseback-riding)

Because of:

A) it's cost i dont like using it for too much

and

B) its durability in weather conditions.

I have several friends in falconry who use kangaroo on eagle anklets so it goes through hell and back again during field season and still holds up tough.

I just can't see why i would need to charge the extra when i know there is something just as good for a cheaper price.

Know what i mean?

It's just finding someone with it that's the issue. :/
