New here, I am interested in getting a parrot. I have always wanted to get a cockatoo for some time. Growing up I had a couple of parakets, named Casper and baby. I also had a cockatiel named jovie. I live alone I have a black German Shepard named zues and a English bulldog named tufflove.also a 10 year old cat named Thor. I am a disabled veteran. I spend most of my time at home or volateering at areptile/fish store. I have just discovered a store nearby that carries exotic birds. They showed me some babie Quakers, so cool.. They also showed me their af grey, yellow head and some new cockatoo's. Any way I have been reading every thing about parrot's,mostly too's that I come across.I have searched online for bird rescues near me no luck. I really want a bird but so far I have not been able to make up my mind, as to witch species I will get. Trying to find the right bird for me is difficult. That's me! Any ideas welcome thanx 4you're time.

Welcome to the flock! Where are you located? There are some rescues that will ship birds. That's how I got my African Grey, Pepper. :)

Hello and welcome!

Where are you located? Do you have a craigslist type site? That's where we adopted Mickey from.....there are always birds needing homes:cool:

Cockatoo's are wonderful, but they can be loud, are you in a living situation where that would be acceptable? If not you may want to consider one of the other parrots.

Hi and welcome! You definitely sound like the right kind of owner for a bird. You are an animal person, and when you are disabled, animals enrich your life so much. I have a digestive disease, and without my animals, I don't know what I would have done. Do your research and you will figure out which is the right bird for you. Visit rescues and even volunteer at one if you can. You will learn about many different birds and may even find the one that clicks with you there.

Thanks for the replies.I live in Amarillo, tx smack dab in the middle of the tx panhandle.I have really been giving it some thought the last couple of months. I'll probably look into macaws, like the Hahns or maybe one of the big ones like the Scarlett. I currently live in a townhouse but I have been looking at full size houses. So pretty soon I'll b moving to a new house here in Amarillo. Could some one tell me how the adoption process works?

Generally you fill out an application, then they do a home inspection, then talk to you about placing a bird. Some require you to take some classes on bird care and behavior, especially if it's your first bird. Usually you sign a contract as well saying if for any reason you need to give up the bird, you will give it back to them.

Welcome to the forum and good luck with your search for a parrot :)
