Oh my Goodness, this is sooo sad. I gave both my birds a walnut to snack on today and Duke had no idea it was a nut. Pretty Birdy ripped through his in about 5 min., but Duke just kept dropping his. 40 min. later, I cracked the Walnut and opened it in front of him and handed him a piece I took off the open walnut. He then realized it was a snack and went to town on it..

I can't even imagine what this bird has been through prior to moving in with me.

Sorry I'm last to saying congrats on Duke!!! What a lucky Mac. I have a wonderful sweet B&G Duke too. :)

Lola kept dropping hers too but she's never been abused nor malnourished. She just basically didn't know how. Willie cracked his open and eats it like a champ while I had to work with Lola a bit. But once she finally got it open and she found out how tasty it was, the following time she cracks it open with ease. They just need to be taught how and what to eat. It showed that part in the recent parrot video off PBS of the people that teach the Scarlet Macaws what they can eat out in the wild.

Congratulations on adopting Duke! You are officially his guardian angel! Its so rewarding to take in a rescue and it is clear Duke needed you! :D

Thanks :) I feel like my birds and I needed each other. Now if I can get them to stop trying to tear each other's beaks off it will be fine lol.. They're just being little stinkers... Pretty Birdy started it first with a "He's my human!" nip, followed by Duke chasing Pretty Birdy off the couch, then Pretty Birdy biting Duke's tailfeathers while he was on the back of my chair this evening..

The thing is when I tell them both to "cut it out", they both go to their corners.. lol.

hahaha that is funny, but I know it sucks. Hopefully they calm down. Do you separate them when you're out of the house?

I'm so glad you have Duke now! Both of your B&Gs seem very happy. Stories like this give me "warm fuzzies" on the inside :)

I actually don't separate them when I go out. Duke is a perch potato for the most part, but he's starting to venture out and explore. Pretty Birdy runs around the house like it's his.

They only get snippy with each other when they're vying for my attention. Otherwise, they leave each other alone and just avoid each other.

Sniff!!! What a lovely story!! Well done on saving him - he's gorgeous and very lucky to have found a loving home at last.

Haha.. I'm lmao right now. Duke was staring out the window when a dog started barking like crazy.. He screamed. "Shut up!" and you could hear the owners trying to quiet down the dog afterwards. They looked up and saw it was a macaw and started laughing! At which point Duke raises his claw, waves, pulls his head back and says, "Hi!" in a rico suave voice.. priceless.

I really need to set up my gopro to record the bird for a full day. Maybe I'll just get a few of them and do the full house coverage thing for a week. It just sounds so "creepy" to put my house under video surveillance for a week.. luckily, I rarely have guests.

LMAO. This is why I love macaws. Please try to catch a recording of his "Hi". Zeus tells my dogs to shut up whenever they start barking also. So funny!

haha, pretty bird, human servant, Duke. :D Pretty much sums up the relationship, doesn't it? Duke is so lucky to have had you and Pretty Bird to adopt him. He's just gorgeous.

Nyspy,

Out of curiosity, how long have you've been training macaws??? You never really did a introduction.
