Parrots
green cheecked conure - Pitri
New here. I currently own a female cockatiel and a supposed male green cheeked conure. Im working on getting a blue fronted amazon which will be my first "large" parrot, if i end up getting it. Looking to learn a few things here.

Hello, welcome. I have over ten years of experience with a pet male Yellow Naped Amazon that I owned & some experience with a Yellow Crowned & a Double Yellow Headed Amazon that I fostered. What questions do you have? There are some generalizations that can be made about Amazon parrots. I have never owned a Blue Front specifically 'tho. I also owned a Blue & Gold macaw, a Citron Crested cockatoo an African Gray parrot & a Rosebreasted cockatoo for over 10 years & I finished hand feeding all of them when they were on 2 feedings per day.

Hi and welcome to the forum! I cant help much with the amazon, but go for it! Its good to research and plan ahead, read, visit the species you want to get, think of names and other things. Thats how keep my self from going crazy untill I can get a bird lol.

Thanks guys! Kerry, my biggest concern with the amazon parrots is the aggression during the breeding cycle. Just how bad is it? I know it wil differ from bird to bird but just to get an idea. And how about getting along with other members of the house. I have read that they are mostly one person birds, but does that mean they will attack anyone that comes near their cage or will they just tollerate them?

Welcome to the forum, some of the smaller 'zons don't get as aggressive during hormonal periods. Each bird is different, but use as a rule of thumb. LCA, RCA, etc.

Well in my home I was the only one who handled my male Yellow Nape, he was great with me except when guests came over, then he would be too excited to handle. I learned to leave him in his cage at that time. An Amazon is not a parrot that young children can or should handle. I lived with my husband & 2 young children at the time. My YN Amazon was pretty much my bird, not the families pet. I now have a female Yellow Nape & I have heard to get a female Amazon to avoid the aggression during the breeding cycle. My Female YNA just went through her breeding cycle & she spent a lot of time on the bottom of her cage tearing up the newspaper & making a sound that signified to me that she was "ready to mate". She lets others scratch her head, but no one else except the vet has tried to hold her since I have had her. She was great with the vet, she let the vet hold her with no problem. My female Yelllow Nape acts aggressive toward my grandaughter while she is in her cage, my grandaughter & I have a very close relationship, I helped raise her from birth, so I never let out the YNA while she (or other young children) is (are) at my house. I love Amazons...I love my YNA's comical, humorous, "out there" personality. I would plan on the Amazon being your pet, 'tho not a family pet if you have young children. I am looking at another Amazon tomorrow that needs a new home.
