Hessian safe?

We get some of our horse feed in Hessian sacks so we have quite a few lying around.
Do you think they would be ok to use for the birds?

As far as i am aware it is made from the same stuff as sisal rope?
 
Looks to be safe as long as it's not treated with anything, which would be hard to tell I think.
 
I'd use it! (Not telling you to, just saying that I would). My only worry would be that birds can easily get claws caught in such stuff and might risk broken limbs. Also, if they preen it or worry at it too much, they could swallow it and cause a deadly blockage in the gut. I guess you have to weigh up whether your bird is likely to do either of the above. Or, you could try the hessian and watch very carefully to see what the bird does with it.

I think everything is a risk: it just depends on how much risk you're willing to take.

I wouldn't think it's treated, horses have a pretty sensitive digestive system. Thanks for the replies, I will give it a go!
