It is very possible to have two hens and have one or both laying eggs. If you want to know the genders there are a lot of companies who can do it and are more affordable than the vet. I use AvianBIoTech, and it costs me are $25 per test, but I can also test for viral diseases, and the more tests you do from each sample the cheaper the tests. I do blood tests every time a new bird comes into my home. It s done using a clipped nail or a few plucked feathers, and you get the results in a few days.
