Finally finally~ it been just a little more than a month ago that i saw tis fella there and my heart can be at peace now since HE'S AT HOME WITH ME!!!:D

first thing i did was shower him when we came back and thankfully the weather was good. but the shower just made the plucked parts more evident and i was a bit sad. he's really skinny too>< will have to weigh him, as soon as i can get him outta da cage….

But now i think i really have a lot of work cut out for me…he does not know how to step up and it took more than half an hour to transfer him from the shower cage to his cage…it was a STRUGGLE to move him i swear. he wouldn't step up so i figured if i tried with a stick maybe he would step on the stick, but no such luck. the moment he saw a stick his crest went up and started to lunge. funny thing was after i brought the stick closer he started waving:eek: but he does have an abusive past…maybe someone used to hit him if he didn't 'wave'.
so my second option was towelling, again no such luck whatsoever. freaked out the moment the towel came into view…probably had bad experience with towels too. eventually while he was distracted with a sunflower seed i picked up his feet quickly and transferred him. not the best method…but what am i to do?

and while collecting him from the place, i asked to see the other parrots there. shouldn't have done so:mad: there're so many there in horrible conditions too. eckkies in cages that would be too small as a permanent cage for a budgie, a plucked grey, U2 & M2 on a metal stand(not plucked though), bng, bf amazon, caiques, lories, hahns macaws, two black palm 'toos….they're either chained to a stand or in ridiculously small cages. as much as i would like to rescue em all, i would probably end up bankrupt if i did so.

anyway, we do what we can!! the rest, maybe in the future…..

good thing is he's started eating already!!really happy that i saw him eating harrisons!:D he has been on zupreem fruity and sunflower seeds…but we have already started the conversion by adding some zupreem natural, harrisons high potency and a bit of goldenfeast's mixes together. and threw in a crumbled up nutriberry since he seems to like it! will start the fresh foods tomorrow morning!

i'm hoping for some advice on how to approach parrots especially cockatoos with an abusive past…so anyone that can chime in will be much appreciated!!

and of course~~can't end this post without some pics eh??

just reached home

but i'm sorta worried about the fact that he's been at the same position since he first entered the cage until now…but he's only been home a few hours! so hopefully its just me being paranoid~

and THANKS SO MUCH for all da encouragement and positive feedback ya'all gave about bringing him home^_^

He is gonna be a real beauty!! Your first hurdle is trust and him liking you. Spend lots of time in the room, just sit and read to him, play some music, lots of treats and goodies. He will get curious and start checking you out. Once that happens its a great first step to bonding and working on basics like step up. Figure out his favorite treat, be it a nut, fruit, bite of swet bread, and only let him have during positive interactions and then training.

You didn't mention him biting so that is a huge plus!! Lots of love and parience.

Good luck and big hug to you for taking in a bird in need!!

His face is so pretty! She's right take it slow. If he lets you open the door you can try offering a nutriberry and see if he comes over. Or if he is already nutriberry obsessed try putting the nutribberry on the opposite side of your hand and see if he steps onto your hand to get the nutriberry. If he does just stay still and let him eat the nutriberry there. If he stays on your hand after he is done you can try bringing him out slowly.

He really looks like he is enjoying that shower!

Glad to see you were able to get him out if the terrible conditions he was in.

He is such a beauty! He did look like he really enjoyed his shower. So thrilled that you have brought him home and are giving him a great home! Bless you for taking in a bird who truly needs a home:)

I'm so happy to see that!! :D that is one lucky bird thanks to an angel like you :)

Anyone know what variety of Sulphur Crested he/she is? Look how extensive and dark yellow the cheek patches are. I've never see it like that. Doesn't look like a Lesser.

Anyway, it feels great to see this!!

yess!!i'm so glad i could bring him home:D

i will take it slowly and build the trust between us before trying to get him to step up again in the future. he's got some major issues to work on…so we'll fix it it one by one one step at a time. suggestions on how to tackle fear of certain objects will be greatly appreciated!!

yeah poor fella probably hardly got showers:( but its ok! i'll be sure to give him more showers now that he's here with me~

@RavensGryf
i was told that he is a lesser sulfur 'too. i read somewhere that they get more of the yellow when they're older? at around 8-10 years. i may be wrong though, only saw one website saying that.

Awww, he's such a handsome boy and if he can overcome the plucking, he's going to woo all the ladies!! ;). I'm sure he will settle down in no time, living in the luxury and love he deseves.

So sad about the other birds you saw :( That's why I avoid pet shops - my heart can't take it. But, like you said - we do what we can and every single parrot saved is a victory. Yay for you!!

What is his name? Did you say?

i haven't really decided on a name…but was thinking of keiko which means happy in japanese. coz ultimately what we want is for him to be happy:)

today he had fresh chop in the morning! was very interested in beaking everything and disfiguring the sprouts but nothing really went into him i think…will be an ongoing challenge to get him to eat fresh stuff!!

i will have to bring him to a vet soon. but do ya'all think i should wait till he's ok with stepping up and going into a carrier before bringing him? or just get all the scary stuff over and done with as soon as possible?meaning i would have to force him into a carrier and well vet examinations always involve some forms of restraining…so it might be better to just do it all at once?

Yann, I have been reading about this bird since you posted the first photos. This thread and pics makes me so happy!! You got yourself a real beauty! Like everyone said, take it slow and let him initiate contact if you can. Focus on taking good care of him until he understands you aren't going to hurt him. Music, reading to him, and just being close enough for him to study you and hear your voice will help him a lot. I love the name Keiko and it's meaning.

It isn't necessary in my experience to train your bird before a vet visit. Just let them know the circumstances and that you aren't sure how he will react. Most avian vets are prepared for that. They will gently restrain him if they need to, but good vets can do this with the least amount of trauma. Insist on going with him into the exam room like you would with any toddler. Good luck! I'm so happy for you both!

just a question….he still has the metal s-hook on his leg coz i haven't managed to bring him to the shop to get it off. he's almost always chewing on it:eek: but do ya'all think its possible for that to be a distraction for his plucking? i haven't seen him pluck at all since i got him. some feathers at the bottom of the cage, but no blood on the ends so probably not plucking. he's constantly worrying the metal thing though...

Wow! He is one of the prettiest cockatoos I've ever seen. His face is stunning. He looks like you might've caught him in time before he became a really serious plucker. Just keep up with all those toys to distract and occupy him. However, if he has something on his leg that is really distressing him, try to get him into the vet ASAP to have it removed. While uncommon, parrots have done serious damage to their legs before trying to chew bands off. You want to distract him from plucking with more permanent solutions anyways (toys, foraging, social interaction ext....).

a not so happy update today...his blood feather, a flight one is broken. i'm not sure if he plucked it but it has already been there for a few days considering the dried blood. i just saw it after giving him a shower just now.*

its just hanging there awkwardly...and the other side is well bleeding but still intact. and he sorta goes into this frenzy before furiously preening. i'm guessing its uncomfortable or itchy for him. he is clipped...well clipped is the wrong word. his feathers have been BUTCHERED OFF and maybe he's not used to having new feathers there?

the avian vet will only be in on friday, is there anything i can do for him before that?

hello everybirdie!!:D

keiko here is doing quite well… he steps up and can do a few tricks already!! will get some vids of him up too:) will still have to work on the bonding and trust part but i feel that we've made progress!!!

also i think i now understand why so many 'toos are in rescues~ when he screams it sounds like…..like he's being murdered:eek: but we were mentally prepared for that at least:09:

I'm so glad to hear you and Keiko are making progress! :) little by little. A lot of Toos come out their shell easier than some other species. I'm sure Keiko is still going "wow! What is this new life? I can't believe it!!" So happy for you.

I hope his feather heals well and he gets used to having them! Most of the time the bleeding stops on it own and is no problem, but in case of a severe break when the blood doesn't seem to stop, it's good to have hemostats or small needle nose pliers around to gently towel him to yank the bleeding feather out by the base of the shaft quickly and firmly. Good luck! :)
