Rio- Alexandrine parrot
Hello everyone!! My boy Rio is finally here!!

We picked him up at 4:45 this afternoon! The house he came from was ridden with cigarette smoke. The cage was not big enough for a budgie, there was no toys, just a wooden dowl and a cement perch. As soon as I laid eyes on him I knew there was no return, the guy was rough with him and had 4 screaming kids, the poor thing was petrified. I paid $300 for him, which is reasonable, and couldn't ask for anything better, he's quiet, and has his baby voice😊 he's only 10 months old, approx. he is affraid of stepping up so I put him in a stick to put him in his cage. Anyway I have to go now :) bye everyone, Thankyou!!

Thank You so much for saving him!!
Some people just don't understand birds and should not have them :(

Make sure you keep us informed
Would LOVE to see pictures of him !!

Tay, I am sooo excited for you!!!
I am thrilled that you rescued that poor baby, and that you finally have your dream bird home with you!
I can't wait to see pictures of Rio, please post some soon!

Here's a few more, forgot that I couldn't upload more than one pic at a time, so I made this collage of his first day.

Some help please. How do I get him to trust me, he accepts food and treats but does not step up and lunges and bites, I've withstanded a few showing no emotion but I wanna try to fix this, Thankyou.

He's adorable! I love ringnecks!

Rio is gorgeous, and he sure must feel like he hit the lottery when you brought him home:)

What a precious face! Your collage of his homecoming really made me smile. :)
Already stepping out on his balcony, so you can see him better. Actually I would love to have an Alex! That's another fantastic thing about this forum, for those of us that can't choose one parrot species and want one of each instead, we can get attached to our friend's flock members. It saves money and floor space. It's harder to hear those amazing voices, for that, I have to wait until Alex videos are posted. I'm sort of hinting here.

Allee, you may regret that. :D.

I will try to post a video of Bundii and her "OMG, OMG, OMG, dad is home" call tonight.

In all seriousness, she does have some cute noises as well. I might try and get them as well.

Oh, he's just adorable!

Aww, Rio is BEAUTIFUL, Thanks for Sharing Tay

Trusting you is just a time thing, try not to do anything that makes him lunge or bite, Sometimes it takes a week, sometimes a month, sometimes more

Will he step up on a stick? Using a treat every time he steps up might help
Be patient, Rio will learn to love you and trust you in no time!!

Keep us updated!!

Joe

I didn't realise Rio was a rescued baby, Tay. Good on you for saving him! Now, he'll have a much better life.

Always move quietly and smoothly around him. Speak in a low voice and don't do anything suddenly or unexpectedly. Offer him treats through the cage and when he's taking those nicely, try offering them through the open door. Use long things like a strip of celery, millet spray, long carrot stick, dandelion leaf etc. The longer periods you can spend with him, the sooner he'll be able to respond. It's all about conditioning and getting him used to you and what you do around him.

Just keep shovelling the treats into him so he associates you with nice things. As Joe said, try not to do things that prompt him to lunge or bite at first. Just move slowly and approach confidently. If you shorten the distance each time, try to reward him so he sees it all as a positive experience. Don't attempt stepping up until he's quite used to your hand being in his cage and taking treats freely from you.

Ask questions, too. That's the best way to find out what you want to know (I learned that off Sesame Street). LOL! Best of luck with Mr Echo and please keep us in touch with your progress. Barney and Madge are busting to hear about him!

congratulations on your new bird

With him trusting you, don't forget the environment he came from. It's going to take awhile for him to trust you. But, with him already accepting treats from you, that is a great start. I know it's taking some people, weeks, months, even years before their rehomed parrots would tolerate any hands. Let him go at his own pace, don't rush it. Maybe start stepping up on a perch first, less intimidating, then give him his favourite treat.

Best of luck, sounds like you rescued him just in time! It breaks my heart seeing birds in terrible environments . It takes special people like you to save them. He's lucky to end up in your house. There will be good days and bad days. Hopefully soon good days will outnumber the bad days. And it is rewarding when you see they start trusting you, and their true personality comes out.
